FAU Notables

The Owls are down to the wire in the 2022 regular season and conference slate. They were hopeful to take last weekend's trio against a pesky and emerging Charlotte club, but things did not go as planned in many areas.

Hunter Cooley started off quite fine on Friday night, delivering three solid innings of work before he began to run into trouble in the 4th when allowing a run. The fifth would be the undoing, as a three run homer highlighted a five RBI effort from the 49ers and eventual loss.

Game two was stopped in the top of the 2nd on Saturday after a lengthy weather delay, and slated to resume at 9:30 Sunday in what would be the first of basically a shortened double-header. But that postponement also saw weather. The teams concluded with a near record setting 15 inning marathon that fortunately went the Owls' way 10-9 courtesy of red-hot Dylan Goldstein's walk-off RBI single.

Unfortunately, normally reliable Tyler Burnham was also roughed up in the finale - which started late at 5:00 PM - and the 49ers walked away with a run rule 14-4 effort to claim the series.

A couple of positives to take away though, with the first being the aforementioned Dylan Goldstein. The left fielder continues to yield an electric bat and led FAU in hitting for the weekend going .455 at the plate, with five hits, 3 RBI, and four runs scored.

Goldstein is currently ranked 18th in the league in hitting with a .326 average, 10th in slugging (.672), 5th in on base percentage (.484), and is also perfect in fielding with 65 catches in left (T 7th).

Secondly, RHP Nicholas Del Prado (photo below) had his best outing as an Owl on Saturday in relief for game two while posting a career high 6.2 innings or work with just three hits, one run, two walks, and five strikeouts.

Del Prado picked up his first collegiate victory last season after throwing two scoreless innings against Marshall, so it would seem he may be a potential arm to use strategically in the series given past history against the Herd and current trend as well.

Fittingly, in a line-up shift, Coach McCormack has elected push Burnham up to game two Friday afternoon, leaving game three on Saturday to be announced.

In a three way tie for 4th in the standings along side Old Dominion and Charlotte, the Owls will be looking to win as many games as possible this weekend, while remaining hopeful for losses to those above them.

Herd Notables

The last time the Owls visited the Herd they played at Appalachian Power Park in Charleston, WV. However, this time the teams will meet at the Kennedy Center YMCA. Marshall must not be too fond of that, as the page listed on the Herd Zone website doesn't offer more than a title at present. View it Here if interested. Quite the digs:

What is known is that there are no lights - hence all games in the series being played during the day, making it difficult for fans to attend who have jobs during the day.

Having been eliminated due to the head to head tiebreaker with UAB - who will be the 8th seed - the Herd won't have anything to play for in the series aside from pride and being a potential spoiler to the Owls' seeding hopes in the Championship.

Whether the potential is there is up for debate. After a sweep of Western Kentucky on the road, the thunder left the Herd as they have gone 1-of-11 since. Included in the losses are a 50-20 run drubbing from Charlotte in a sweep at the YMCA, a salvage against UTSA, a sweep by Old Dominion, and a sweep by Morehead State in mid-week action over the last two periods. Ironically, the closest total deficit was against the the Monarchs, as the two games of that series were decided by a single run.

All of this aside, Marshall sits just below the Owls in total team stats in both hitting and staff performance. And, as most baseball fans are well aware of, the performance on the mound by both teams will likely tell the tale when the final out is registered.

Individually, infielder Luke Edwards is seventh in C-USA hitting with a .372 mark and is 2nd in hits with 42. Catcher Kyle Schaefer has the unfortunate title of strikeout C-USA king, having been set down a league-high 43 times.

The bracket is set and it is confirmed that FAU will take on UTSA at 8:30 PM (great time eh?) for Game Four of the 2022 C-USA Championship on Wednesday.

On a positive note, they will avoid both ODU and Charlotte initially as they have been placed in the "west" bracket with USM, UAB, and UTSA. This actually is about as good as it can get from that standpoint.

Will post a thread soon.

Why do you say that?

We played them better than we did against ODU and Charlotte IMHO…like our chances on this side MUCH better than the other one.

At first glance I thought the same: Southern Miss is a top 10 team who traditionally has our number.

But I think I actually agree with Rick: we should have taken 2 of 3 from them this year.

We have a shot on this side of the bracket……. If we have any semblance of pitching.
