Former West Virginia Linebacker Ja'Corey Hammett has announced his intentions to join the Owls' class of 2023.

Hammett entered the portal back in June of 2022, and will have four years remaining. He played in one game for the Mountaineers in the 2021 season against Baylor and posted two tackles.

Former Owl OC Travis Trickett was responsible for bringing him to the Mountaineer program. Prior to signing with WKU, he also held offers from Miami, Arkansas, Florida State, Kentucky, Mississippi State, Nebraska, Pitt, Rutgers, South Carolina and Tennessee.

Hammett played outside linebacker and weak-side defensive end for coach Max Edwards at Miami Northwestern High, where he was named 2019 Miami Herald All-Dade 5A-2A Second Team on defense, and helped lead Northwestern to its third consecutive FHSAA Class 5A State Championship title that year after defeating Jones 34-17. He was also named a Sports Illustrated All-American candidate.

Hammett was Listed by Rivals as No. 29 at his position, as well as the No. 77 overall prospect in Florida out of high school. He originally pledged to Miami before later switching his decision to West Virginia.
