2022 CUSA Baseball in Regional & Super Regional Play

Add topic

Post

As expected, Southern Miss will host a regional in Hattiesburg after remaining in the Top 25, despite losing the C-USA Championship. They may be able to move on to Super Regional play with a solid showing on the hill:

#1 Southern Miss. (43-16)
#2 LSU (38-20)
#3 Kennesaw St. (35-26)
#4 Army West Point (31-23)

LA Tech will travel to Austin, and will also have a tougher time making it out of that regional while initially taking on Dallas Baptist, who appears to be a surprise selection and will join C-USA next season:

#1 Texas (42-19)
#2 Louisiana Tech (42-19)
#3 Dallas Baptist (34-22-1)
#4 Air Force (30-27)

ODU is left out of the tournament despite going 41-17 and hitting the third most dingers nationally in 2022.

Personally think that was a big mistake, as they would have provided some spark and energy in games.

Austin Final:

LA Tech 12  DBU 5

The Bulldogs show exactly why another C-USA team should have received the nod over the Patriots with a seven run win.

They scored a combined nine runs over the 5th and 6th frames, including a rare inside the park grand slam to seal the win.

LA Tech will take on host #9 Texas, who downed Air Force earlier today 11-3, tomorrow at 7:00 PM.

Austin Final:

LA Tech 2  Texas 5

Tied at 1-1 after six frames, the Bulldogs are sent down to the loser's bracket as normally reliable reliever Kyle Crigger gives up a six hit, three run 7th inning allowing the host Longhorns to claim the win.

Each team netted a run in the 8th.

LA Tech will take on Air Force in an elimination game at 2:00 PM on Sunday.

If they win, they will face Texas again at 8:00 PM.

Hattiesburg Final:

Southern Miss 6  LSU 7 (10)

The Golden Eagles were ahead 6-2 to start the bottom half of the 9th inning. While needing just one strike to end the contest at three different times, they see the Tigers tie it up to force the extra frame.

LSU loaded the bags with no outs in their next turn, and would walk-off the win.

USM will next face Kennesaw State in an elimination game at 2:00 PM.

Should they win, they will take on the Tigers again at 7:00 PM.

Hattiesburg Final:

Kennesaw State 3  Southern Miss 4 (10)

Host USM stays alive in dramatic fashion with a walk-off win in game one of Sunday's action.

The Golden Eagles got a fine performance from Hunter Riggins, who tossed eight innings without an earned run.

But the Owls finally cracked the code to move ahead 3-2 in the top of the 9th.

However, Southern Miss answered with a game tying RBI single with one out to force the extra frame.

RHP Tyler Stewart struck out the side in the 10th with two on base to stave off KSU and set up the win.

USM will take on LSU at 7:00 PM.

Austin Final:

Air Force 9  LA Tech 7

Despite being outhit nearly 2-1, the Bulldogs grind out a 7-7 tie in a back and forth contest through seven innings.

The Falcons would pull away for good with a two run 8th, thus ending LA Tech's post season. And it would again come off the arm of Kyle Crigger.

LTU had their chance to respond when they loaded the bags in the frame but left them that way.

The Bulldogs finish the year at 43-21.

Hattiesburg Final:

LSU 4  Southern Miss 8

After an early barrage of scattered pairs of runs during the first three innings, a 4-4 tie is broken by the Golden Eagles' three score effort in the 6th.

They would add a solo homer from the bat of RF Carson Paetow in their final trip to the plate.

The Tigers used six pitchers for the contest, while USM threw four and received a spectacular performance from LHP Justin Storm who tossed five innings of relief allowing just two hits to coincide with seven strikeouts.

It was the first win for Southern Miss over LSU since 2007.

The teams will meet again on Monday at 4:00 PM for the Championship Game.
