Notes

Owls

The FAU Baseball team is coming off of an emotional series victory, winning three of their four games against FIU. This was their second straight series victory, with both of those series being 3-1 victories over FIU. The series reached its climax in game three when Jackson Wenstrom hit a walk-off sacrifice fly after a fight broke out in the play before.

FAU outscored FIU 25-17 in this series, a far cry from their run differential of 40-26 in the first series, but it shows improvement on the pitching front. In particular, SP Javi Rivera had the most dominant outing in this series, pitching a complete game in game four. In 7.0 innings, Rivera struck out eight batters, giving up only five hits and a home run.

The Owls were very disciplined at the plate during last week's series, walking 23 times while striking out 28 times. A near 50/50 split is pretty good, considering FAU pitching struck out 25 batters while only walking 12 in last weekend's series.

LF Mitchell Hartigan had the best series out of all Owls hitters, going 4-9 (.444) with six RBIs and a home run. He only played in three of the four games in last weekend's series after being ejected from game three, the first game of a Sunday doubleheader, after being involved in the aforementioned fight after sliding into the catcher at home plate.

Hilltoppers

In their last series, the WKU Hilltoppers swept Marshall, outscoring the Thundering Herd 41-18. Their best pitching performance came in game two of last week's series when SP Sean Bergeron struck out eight batters and only gave up one run on four hits. In that same game, DH Richard Constantine and LF Justin Carlin each accounted for three RBIs.

Carlin won the C-USA Player of the week award, hitting .500 with three home runs and 12 RBIs. He is a part of a deadly outfield duo with Ray Zuberer III, who he shares a team lead in home runs, each having six. Zuberer III has the lead in RBIs with 30, while Carlin is in third with 25.

RP Mason Vinyard is WKU's top pitcher, boasting a 5-3 record while all 14 of his appearances are from the bullpen. In those 14 appearances, he has a 2.91 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP.

At this point in the season the team simply needs to get in the tournament. Once that happens , anything is possible. It's baseball.

The Owls are rolling with a new-look lineup with Steven Loden hitting cleanup and Mitchell Hartigan playing DH to make room for Jalen DeBose in the outfield. Loden and DeBose have both earned their spots in the lineup, so it should be interesting to see how they fill their roles here in game one.

Loden struck out looking in his first at-bat as the cleanup hitter, Pendleton followed that up with a strikeout of his own to end the inning.

Cooley has been hot as of late, coming off of a dominant outing last week. It's 'sounding' like he is keeping that up.

Jonathan mentioned that Braden Ostrander, Thomas Haggerty, and Jackson Spiller all did not make the trip to Western Kentucky. We may have some surprises on the mound this weekend.
