BREAKING: 3* OLB Chris Jones Commits to FAU Football's Class of 2020
The Owls have landed a major commit in local defensive end prospect Chris Jones.
Jones, who was committed Kansas since early August, de-committed on January 27th just after setting up a visit to Boca Raton for the final visit weekend on the 2020 cycle.
FAU outside LB coach Raymond Woodie has built a relationship with Jones going back to his time at FSU, where he originally recruited Jones to play.
"Coach Woodie was watching a workout at one of the camps at FSU and he told me he has always liked what I do and sees a lot of potential,'' Jones said.
Jones also sees himself as a great fit for the stand up outside line backer that will be utilized in FAU's 3-4 scheme FAU will be switching to.
"Playing at outside linebacker, they need me as a passer rusher to put as much pressure on the quarterback as possible to help the defensive backs, while also using my athleticism to drop back in coverage when needed.''
The 6-4, 215 lbs. three-star prospect had an impressive 48 tackles and eight sacks in just 10 games during his senior campaign.
Coconut Creek's defensive line coach Johnnie Sloan might be familiar name to some older Owl fans as he was part of FAU football's original signing class. He tallied 25 tackles for loss between 2001 and 2003.
"Chris is different than most student athletes as it is academics first", said Sloan. "His dedication and leadership is beyond comparison. ''I hope Chris breaks all my records by the time he is done."
Jones, who has a 4.48 GPA, will be majoring in Mechanical Engineering at FAU. That program combined with the opportunities Boca Raton offers were some of the reasons he chose Florida Atlantic.
"There is a lot of money and potential opportunities to meet and get connected with successful people in Boca Raton", said Jones.
Jones becomes the first prospect from Broward County to join the FAU 2020 class.
