Catching Up With FAU Football's Latest 2020 Commit Alvin Dempsey
New FAU Football Head Coach Willie Taggart landed his first big commitment this weekend when East Central Mississippi CC defensive lineman Alvin Dempsey gave his pledge to FAU football's 2020 class.
FAU seemed like a lock to land the three-star prospect after his official visit during the bye week in November.
But when then head Coach Lane Kiffin left for Ole Miss he became uncertain of what the future would be at FAU, and committed to North Texas.
Despite that occurring, the Owls never left Dempsey's mind.
"Even after I committed to North Texas, FAU was still always in my heart", Dempsey said.
Quickly after his announcement press conference, Taggart went to work on restoring the relationship, and calling to set up an in-home visit with Dempsey was one of his first priorities. The next day Taggart flew to the Panhandle to see him.
The effort paid off, as he convinced the touted tackle to jump back on board with FAU.
Seeking familiar evaluations, Dempsey reached out to his cousins Raekwon Webb, who plays for FSU, and Trey Sanders, who was recruited by FSU coming out of high school, in order to see what they thought of FAU's new ball coach and both had glowing reviews.
Dempsey also has a newly found affection for the city of Boca Raton.
"I love the idea of being in a city with many successful people, it motivates you to becomes like them,'' said Dempsey. "Boca Raton reminds me of my home town Port St. Joe, with being so close to the beach, and I love the beach."
In Dempsey's time at East Central Mississippi he piled up seven sacks, ten tackles for a loss, and even had two interceptions in two seasons.
The 6-1, 300 lbs framed lineman, plans to sign this Wednesday and enroll in January to be part of spring football, and will need to be a vital part of the defensive linemen rotation as the Owls' lose six current players to graduation.
