FAU’s Road to Signing Day 2014: Wide Receiver

Kenneth Rawls

Wide Receiver

The Skinny: While FAU has found some production from it’s past few recruiting classes at wide receiver, there has been a few notable duds. Derek Moise, Hakeem Ishmar and Jeremy Glinton have failed to make an impact on offense, while signees Chris Gilchrist and Stephan Clark are no longer with the program. Wide receiver isn’t a pressing need in this year’s recruiting class, but it’s an area that should be addressed. Grayshirt Kamrin Solomon joined the team in January, but he appears to be a year or two away from finding the field. FAU currently has one wide receiver committed to the class, and new head man Charlie Partridge is targeting a large group of others. It’s expected that a few new names will emerge as signing day approaches.

Committed:

Jerry Jones - Glades Central (Belle Glade, Fla.) - Jones committed to FAU over the summer and hasn’t wavered on his pledged despite the coaching changes. He played at three different high schools in the span of four years, but was the workhorse at running back for Glades Central this season. Jones projects as a slot receiver and has some flashes of Daniel McKinney in him, but he might be better suited in the backfield. He will visit FAU the weekend of January 31st.

The Targets:

Kenneth Rawls - Blanche Ely (Pompano Beach, Fla.) - Rawls is committed to Northern Illinois, but has been on FAU’s radar for months. Partridge’s decision to keep assistant Jovan Dewitt on staff, only helped the Owls cause, as Dewitt has a presence at Blanche Ely. Rawls is lanky and can disappear at times on the field, but he will make plays when needed. The two-star wideout plans to visit January 17th.

Darius Harvey - Lincoln (Tallahassee, Fla.) - A dynamic dual-threat quarterback that will dazzle you with his elusive speed, Harvey is being recruited by FAU as a wide receiver. He’s raw, but has potential to transition to the slot position at 5-foot-11, 175 pounds. Harvey will visit Idaho on January 17th before making his way to Boca Raton the weekend of the 24th. Troy is also recruiting the two-star prospect.

Deionte Gaines - Dr. Phillips (Orlando, Fla.) - Patridge put Gaines high on his board, but the three-star wide receiver committed to Colorado State in January before the staff could even make a face-to-face contact. It’s probably a long-shot at this point, but FAU will most likely try to flip Gaines or at least land a visit in the coming weeks.

Dennis Turner - Dillard (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) - Turner was at one point committed to Miami, but the ‘Canes wanted the three-star athlete as a defensive back. Turner wants to play wide receiver in college, and that’s why he has opened his recruitment back up. He has yet to set a FAU visit, but was hearing from Arkansas when Partridge was on the staff. Toledo is rumored to be the leader for Turner.

Clint Stephens - Dwyer (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) - Stephens has been quiet on his recruitment throughout the process, but there is at least some interest from FAU. The speedster took an official to Arkansas when Partridge was in Fayetteville, and is hearing from the likes of N.C. State and Marshall.

Brandon Shed - Benjamin School (North Palm Beach, Fla.) - Shed is a true “diamond in the rough.” Having played high school football at one of the state’s lowest levels, he didn’t face top competition. However, you can’t fault his size at 6-foot-2, 180 pounds and his speed. He was being recruited by new assistant Roc Bellantoni when the later was at Villanova, but holds no offers. FAU might be able to sell a preferred walk-on position.

Others to Watch:

Ezra Saffold(Dwyer, Fla.); Alex Thomas (Chaminade-Madonna Prep); Jewison Dawkins (Plantation, Fla.); Darrius McFadden (Stranahan, Fla.); Darrian Josey (Boynton Beach, Fla.); Edwin Thomas (John Carroll II, Fla.); Zaquon Tyson (Norland, Fla.); Derius Davis (Alonso, Fla.); Joe Williams (Dunbar, Fla.).
