The Florida Atlantic football team has added another big piece to its 2020 recruiting class, as Zephyrhills Christian lineman Malik Jones announced his commitment late Friday night.
After receiving an offer from the Owls' staff in late May, Jones would then make the trip down to participate in FAU's June 15th prospect camp and saw enough during that visit to make his choice.
"I am Christian and spent time praying on my decision and decided FAU is where I fit,'' Jones, told FAUOwlsnest.com. "The chance to play right away was another important factor.''
Ultimately, he passed on offers from both Southern Miss and Troy.
The three-star prospect, who was named to Tampa Bay Times' All-North Suncoast football first team after 2018 season, has enjoyed a dominating high school wrestling career, winning a state title in the 1A 285 lbs division, and posting an all-time record of 187-17.
"Wrestling is a one-on-one sport, so there is no blaming others if you lose", said Jones who also has seen time at multiple positions on the gridiron. "I can play both offensive line and defensive line, but I feel center or guard are my best positions.''
Malik's father, Spence Jones, serves as the defensive coordinator and basketball coach at Zephyrhills Christian.
"You will never have to question Malik's character", said the elder Jones when asked about the one thing FAU fans should know regarding his son. "He is a mentally strong, and has a high level of discipline.''
Jones, who expects to sign in February 2020, becomes the 7th overall commit and the second offensive lineman of the 2020 cycle; joining Miami Columbus offensive lineman Andre Lamas.
