It aint gonna be pretty this weekend! I bet Tebow watched the tape of Grothe running for 40yds on 4th down against us. Remember, Tebow is in the Heisman hunt. I think Urban Myer may keep him in as long as possible. Tebow put up 7 TDs against Carolina, which we will be lucky if he only puts 7 up on us due to the fact the Percy is back.

Enough of me being Negative (honest)!

I do want to see Serge and Kris knock some heads off!

I like being the underdog. We have nothing to lose. 34 points seems a bit much. That was the spread on the Clemson game last year and they covered the spread (by a lot more than 34). South Carolina wasn't as much as Clemson, but they beat us pretty soundly too.

I think we hang tight for a while, but then once our second strings get in, Florida takes over. They have depth.

I take FAU and 34 points though.

It's probably a fair assessment but as always, let's hope it's closer than that.
I'd hate to have driven narly 5 hours to see us get shutout something like 55-0.
As I see it, the problem will not be as much matching up to them head-to-head but rather staying healthy and energized through all four quarters.

Gators have history with FAU coach
By PAT DOOLEY
Sun sports columnist

You may notice him, the guy two rows over and four seats down. Or the woman wearing too much make-up in Section 13. Or the fella with the graying mustache in the end zone.

Don't they seem to be booing a little extra hard?

Great googly-moogly, it's Florida Atlantic. This isn't Tennessee or FSU taking the field in The Swamp. Chill pill, west stands, stat!

But they remember.

It was 27 years ago. Howard Schnellenberger has had almost as many jobs since then as Homer Simpson (188 as of the last episode of "The Simpsons").

But they remember.

“I hope so,” Schnellenberger said Monday.

Urban Meyer has taken a lot of history lessons since coming to Florida. He has leaned on his players for a feel of the rivalry games. He has talked to his staff about other coaches.

But for this one, you had to be there to understand why the guy behind the glass in the president's box has his fist clenched and the older couple in the blue chairbacks are cursing when the Owls take the field.

Since the two teams have never played before, there is no UF-FAU rivalry, but this is a rivalry game for longtime Gator fans.

It's them vs. that dadgum Schnellenberger.

Here's a little primer for Meyer, his players, the entire Florida Atlantic student body and Gator fans who don't know there used to be dugouts at Florida Field (and a guy dressed as a banana who danced while students chanted “Go bananas! Go-go bananas!”)

Florida used to play Miami every year. Really, I'm not making it up. But this isn't about the ending of the series on a regular basis.

This is about the game that was played at Florida Field in 1980. Florida was ranked, Miami was not. There was a lot of bitterness between the two schools, some of it fueled by the Florida Flop (hey, I've only got so many words per column so I can't explain everything) and Miami envy.

But this was a day for Schnellenberger's Hurricanes. They rolled through the Gators in a stunning upset 31-7. It's how Miami got to 31 that caused some animosity.

The Hurricanes led 28-7, game almost over. The clock was running out and both teams were about to head into the dank locker rooms to peel off sweat-stained mesh jerseys. But — and I can say this because I had graduated four years earlier — the Florida students were a little out of control.

Taunts turned to gestures. Miami players answered back. And then it got ugly.

“They had frozen oranges,” Schnellenberger said. “They'd cut a hole in these oranges, add the juice (I'm guessing the juice was Russian) and freeze them so they'd be cold during the game.”

Game almost over and oranges drained, they started flying. One hit a Miami cheerleader, another hit Schnellenberger's son in the head.

The Miami coach was furious. He called time-out.

“(Former Gator) Kim Helton, who was one of my assistants, told me not to send the guys out there,” he said. “But I told him I have to or else nobody is going to listen to what I have to say. I wanted the press to ask me about why we did it.”

What Miami did was kick a meaningless field goal that meant a lot to Florida fans. Schnellenberger was criticized by the media who covered the Gators for staining a well-coached game and supported by the Miami media for sticking up for his players.

“Those oranges were coming like cannon balls from pirate ships,” he said. “That whole scene had an impact on Florida, too. (Former UF president) Marshall Criser told me they moved the student section because of that.”

Schnellenberger has been back since that 1980 game. His 1982 team lost on James Jones' famous catch and was hammered 28-3 the following year. He had the last laugh. Miami went on to win the national championship that season.

And when he was at Louisville, he brought his team to Gainesville in 1992, a 31-17 loss.

“After that game, do you remember my quote?” he asked. “I said, ‘They finally got this place right. This stadium is air-tight.’ They had built up the north end zone and the noise couldn't get out.”

I told Schnellenberger of the latest expansion on the west side.

“They made it more air-tight, huh?” he said.

Just for you, Howard. Just for you.

Re: Official: Game Week Thread: FAU vs Gators

Well I'm going with a few freinds up to G"ville to watch our owls put up a fight against the gators.  I do believe in any sport that an upset is possible if the team plays hard, and plays to win.  It sucks FAU is playing Uf now after a national title year and with Tebow who I must say can play the game of football.  Tebow doesnt kill teams wiht his arm but more so with his legs; he rushes whenever he gets a chance and he goes up the middle like a true runinng back. That is not good for any Qb no matter how big or strong Tebow better hope one day someone doesnt injure him like Willis Mcgahee a few years back  If FAU wants to win we need to take Tebows runinng game away from him, make him pass everyplay that way he can tire his arm and shoulder out. Tebow doesnt play safe like a Brady and throws short passes he goes all the way for 30 yard bombs to break defenses. This could benefit FAu in the sense that our Db's arent that slow; Polo can get his chance to shine again. FAu would need to tackle Tebow hard and complete the tackle and rough him up.  We also need to score first to set the tone of the game to show we are here to play and win, for instance the Minnesota game.  A quick no huddle offense, and protection for Rusty should give us an oppurtunity to compete.  Edgecomb is also a big factor, he needs to get great field postion on his returns and give Rusty a shot to move the ball down field.  Rusty has started in front of huge crowds in his career so far, the UF fan base shouldn't scare him or make him nervous; this is his next chance  to put this program on the map.

GO Owls!!!!!!!

I too am hoping that Polo gets at least one pick off of Tebow.

The team should be well-aware of the fact that no matter what you're doing or who you're covering, you're also watching Tebow out of the corner of your eye.

From Marcus Nelson's FAU blog:

"My game plan - and I heard other people downstairs talking about it - is to get him out of the game," FAU senior safety Taheem Acevedo said when asked how to stop Tebow. "I don't care how it happens, we just have to get him out of the game. He carries that team."

Acevedo said he wants Tebow to remember him each time he is tackled.

"Whenever I see big guys like that, I'm not going to go low," Acevedo said. "My first thought is to go high and hit where it will hurt him more than anything."

Re: Official: Game Week Thread: FAU vs Gators

I will make my fearless prediction early this week.  Me and the Mrs. are heading to Gainesville on Thursday to prepare for some football game on Saturday.

I would love to see the Owls keep it close.  In the end, I think Tebow is a huge weapon.  He should have some success running right up the gut.  Yeah, I know we did ok against a running Grothe but this is a different story.  My biggest fear is the move I have seen Tebow make many times this year where he fakes the run up the middle, draws the linebackers in for a second and then takes a couple steps back and throws a pass.  That's difficult to stop.  I also expect a Gators score on Special Teams.

Hopefully we stay healthy, play a perfect game, create some turnovers, and who knows what may happen.

Gators 51
Owls 17

Go Owls!!!

Re: Official: Game Week Thread: FAU vs Gators

It would be nice to have Polo steal one from tebow, just to put us back on top of the INT list again.  I would like to have us either stop or slow down Tebow, and get him pulled out of the game quickly.  We did decent against Grothe, but he is a "Poor man's Tebow", as I have heard lately, so I don't think that is a great comparison.  If we keep a game going, I will be happy, but I think if there ever is a chance, this is the year for upsets, so GO OWLS!.  I am heading up friday night, and I'm bringing some birthday luck with me.
