2020 FAU Football Fall Camp

Post

One thing I never got was why was Robison router as a dual threat out of high school. Now he once in a blue moon would show some really nice running ability and he was quick enough in the pocket, but he’s nowhere near as mobile as someone like Tronti.
Robison not only had a world class arm, but he went through his reads really quickly, and that combination is really hard to find.
On the other hand, we were just as successful with Driskel. I wonder if Robison is gone because he would’ve theoretically had competition with Sanders his senior year. That would’ve been really awkward.
But I’m fully content with Tronti, although I’m a little worried what happens if we need a backup who the guy is. He’s from Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida and Robison is from Texas. That’s a lot of points for me considering one is from the South. :)

Via SID Katrina McCormack, notables from yesterday's session:

  • Javion Posey connected with Marvin Alexander for a 65-yard touchdown reception
  • A defensive stop followed
  • Willie Taggart, Jr. found Lajohntay Wester for a 25-yard gain
  • Dalton Hustad stripped the ball from a receiver for the defense’s second turnover of the day
  • Emmanuel Forkuoh climbed the ladder to bat down a would-be reception in the end zone
  • 7-on-7 ended with a deep pass that slipped through the hands of his receiver
  • The offense and defensive lines then took the field to close out the day with nearly an hour of work

Via SID Katrina McCormack, notables from today's session, which was the third of 2020 fall camp:

Friday’s practice saw no sudden changes on the schedule; in fact, the players and staff moved seamlessly through individuals drills, 7-on-7, and through the crossover between practice one, featuring skill players, and practice two, featuring the “bigs.”

  • During individual work, one of the defensive back drills was hand movement for punching the ball out. As fate would have it, the first play of 7-on-7 saw safety Zyon Gilbert use what had just been stressed to break up a 10-yard reception
  • The following play quarterback Nick Tronti found wide receiver John Mitchell 60 yards downfield. It was the first of two deep plays that Mitchell collected on the day. The second he left spinning like a top as he left the end zone
  • As the four quarterbacks moved through their rotations, the defense also continued to shine with Emanuel Forkuoh breaking up a pass, drawing back slaps and praise for the second consecutive day
  • Quarterback Justin Agner and newcomer Aaron Young connected to move the chains and Agner later found Logan Peterson across the middle, and hit Marvin Alexander for better than 20 yards
  • Freshman quarterback Willie Taggart Jr. found fellow newcomer LaJohntay Wester for a 25-yard gain
  • Carter Odell was nearly credited with a pass breakup, but senior receiver Willie Wright would not allow that to happen as he battled his defenders to come away with the ball
  • The first practice would end much like it began, with a defensive back knocking out the ball

A similar format will be held on Saturday.

Ryan will have more later in Owl Bytes, but for now here's a top talking point for today. Of course more may follow.

Via SID Katrina McCormack, notables from Saturday's session, which was the fourth of 2020 fall camp, and the Owls are yet to employ pads.

  • The first pass of the day was broken up by Korel Smith, seemingly setting a tone, and the second play saw the defense recover a fumble along the sideline. It looked to be a long day for the Owls’ offense
  • John Mitchell turned that thought around with a diving catch across the middle for a 25-yard gain and then it became a day for the highlights
  • Mitchell’s diving catch was followed by a 50-yarder collected by BJ Alexander, then by Wester’s first nice catch of the day, also a 50+-yarder
  • Senior receiver Willie Wright kept the defense honest with a catch and run
  • Jordan Helm, who continues to be a vocal defensive leader, recorded his second pass breakup of the day
  • After a defensive shift, the fresh legged Owls held tight coverage forcing the play to end
  • The Owls broke for water, then returned to the field and continued with their quarterbacks sharing snaps, this time seeing Justin Agner first in the rotation. Agner twice opted for BJ Emmons for his outlet pass
  • Senior Caliph Brice recorded an interception
  • TJ Chase caught a pretty pass that floated over his shoulder into his waiting hands and mimicked the same play about six snaps later
  • Ashton McNeal broke up a pass, nearly had an interception and would have had a clear sideline to travel
  • Jordan Merrell met the ball at its height to out-jump his defender for a goal line catch
  • The next play saw the defense blanket the receivers for a no pass
  • Coaches called the last play, and the final play was the nicest of the day, with Wester ripping the ball of double coverage for the score

It appears Ross and Gilbert have switched positions to give depth to other units on the D. Any idea who is replacing them and if we can see more position switches during camp?

As a huge sports fan I'm concerned. I'm wondering if others are like me. I have lostvtotal interest in MLB,  NBA,  hockey, everything. I don't watch anything on tv. When/if college football starts, do you think others will have lost interest and will not attend. Even with fau's limited following.

I agree with you that there has been a decline in sports interest as we have it now.
The sterile sports arenas with no fans and the pumped in crowd noise has certainly taken some of the attraction away from watching live sports on TV.
We will have to get used to that environment or wait until we get back to normal to bring back what sports used to be like.
I am willing to wait. Go Owls!

The football team moved into shoulder pads for the first time in the 2020 camp schedule today. Via SID Katrina McCormack, notables from the session, which was their fifth:

  • With two practice fields in play and individual work complete, the Owls used the west field for 7-on-7, and the east field the one closest to the stadium and the beach, for competition among the linemen.
  • On the west field, there was the occasional celebration, such as after Teja Young’s pass breakup or
  • Matthew Akuchie’s use of height to come down with a reception
  • Incidentally, both players wear No. 32, Young in white and Akuchie in red
  • Running back Glover Cook also made a nice catch, but the action and real celebrations came from the east field, where it was a fight in the trenches
  • The first of many fist-raising chants came when redshirt sophomore offensive lineman Marquice
  • Robinson welcomed a true defensive line freshman to the Owls with a pancake. The period came to a close shortly after true freshman offensive lineman Andre Lamas recorded a knockdown
  • “Team” began when James Charles sprinted around the edge, kicked it into the next gear and then began a foot race past each of his defenders for a 60-yard scoring run
  • Tyrek Tisdale had a 15-yard run followed by a 50-yard diving catch by newcomer and Duke graduate Aaron Young
  • Malcolm Davidson, the Owls leading rusher in 2020 with an average of seven yards per carry, got into the action with a 40-yard run. He was followed by Larry McCammon III’s run up the middle, and then
  • Daniel Leconte broke through a cluster of players for a positive gain
  • The session ended with Charles collecting a pass and using his feet to get the offense into the red zone

FAU will return to the practice fields Tuesday morning with the afternoon being reserved for the quarterbacks to speak with members of the media.

We'll be on tap.

Via SID Katrina McCormack, here is a recap, and her notables from today's camp session - the 7th for the team:

Florida Atlantic University’s football team didn’t make it to the practice field Wednesday morning, with rainy bands and lightning moving through the area. Instead, the Owls adapted to the sudden change by heading home, returning for lunch and then having an afternoon of competition.

The afternoon session began with punt coverage/special teams work on the field closest to the beach, while the linemen squared off in the west field. The Owls then moved into outside linebacker pass coverage drills at one location and run protection at another with a steady rotation.

The afternoon workout was occasionally broken up by cheers from both fields. Following a break, the real competition began.

Once again, the “big men” competed, with the offensive linemen cheering more often than the defensive linemen. The remainder of the squad worked through 7-on-7 where they were put into third down situations, with the offense pitted against the defense.

Each of the four quarterbacks moved through the period and each operated with success. Running back James Charles, who was one of three Owls to graduate on Tuesday, used his feet to change direction and elude tacklers while Brandon Robinson caught a Javion Posey pass for an offensive celebration.

A few plays later, it is was a perfect Posey pass that landed in Aaron Young’s outstretched hands. Young had blazed by his defender and held that pace until he reached the end zone followed by the sound of three horns to end practice, but not before head coach Willie Taggart tabbed the offense as the victor.
