Observation : The Future

Post

I know the summer doldrums are among us but I must admit Coach Taggart is pulling moves and doing it well. I miss Kiffin but Taggart seems to be on a mission to land unreachable talent that we have never seen before at FAU.  And I see our progression as a program in steps but we are leaping forward and fast.  The transfer portal has changed college football and now guys can possibly go to a smaller school to start as a true freshman, but also leave if the program is not a fit.

The signing of Sanders has taken us to another level,  all we need is four things. FAU needs to win consistently (CUSA TITLES),  a signature win against a ranked opponent preferably on the road, we need to get ranked and get into a NY6 bowl game. Once these 4 things occur FAU will be one of the top G5 teams. Conference realignment will happen no matter what, the landscape will continuously change with teams dropping  to FCS  and making the move up.  I think Super conferences will happen.

I think by UCF claiming a NC it brought the idea of how unfair the system has always been.  The system is set up for smaller programs of the world to never win.  The only team close was Boise st.,  but think they had a generational QB, had to win lots of games and lose one game and they were out of the hunt. When they questioned that P5 teams were scared to schedule them they challenged the establishment.  They were finally invited tot he Big East with it dissolving little after which is a slap in the face,  the same will happen to UCF.  They have a good market that’s The only thing,  but their fans are not nice and other purists and fans hate their guts.  What do we need to do to get to the next Conference?

I think we're already one of the top G5 teams. When Sanders is our starter we will be on ESPN all the time and on the national stage. We will be the darlings of G5.
The average fan doesn't necessarily know what the best G5 conferences are or who's in better position to move up. There have been schools like BSU and UCF who have built their programs up over a very long time. Well guess what? No one cares. They're still G5. And when UCF drops out of the top 25, never returning for a very long time, no one will care. Does anyone really even care about BSU at this point?
All of this complaining has sure done UCF a lot of good right? They're clinging on to the top 25 barely and are a couple close losses away from total irrelevancy. What has their good stretch brought them? I won't say great stretch they basically only beat Maryland and an Auburn team that didn't care. Those "great" years has made everyone hate them. They looked so ridiculous with the fake NC thing. And they're not moving up. We might have a chance to move up to the P5. What I say is this. Instead of the AAC let's think about the P5. And let's no complain like UCF fans did. Because the best of the best will make it to the top. It's not unfair. And we should let UCF do the complaining while we move up. And let the AAC mire in mediocrity.

As Shane has pointed out multiple times, getting the chance to “move up” is all about the money you can make the conference - not really the other way around.  There are a lot of ifs (if FAU keeps winning CUSA titles, beats a ranked team or teams, gets on ESPN all the time, etc.).  But more importantly, that success needs to lead to sold out stadiums, huge upticks in donations, drastic increases in prices, massive expansion to the stadium and other sports venues, etc.

All that has to happen with consistent winning and fan support before any move up is legitimately possible in my opinion.

I think people also need to adjust their expectations and see where the dust settles after the possibility of missing a season due to Covid.

Many schools are going to have some real tough times financially.

Not only could FAU miss out on the and season ticket and TV money, but around 60 percent of FAU's athletic budget is made up of student fees.

What happens when there are no fall sports? Students will fight being charged for something they can not use.

Until we see our fundraising and fan support grow 10X we are staying in C-USA no matter how many 11 win seasons or P5 upsets we ring off.

For comparison, UCF raised nearly 53 million dollars on commitments and cash gifts in 2019.

Money is the name of the game in college sports and how people feel about a school's fans or championships do not matter.

If we lose money every year running our football program…then does not having a season put us in the black?  :Big-Grin:

As long as FAU beats their P5 and ranked opponents, then they have a chance. It's the highest-ranked conference winner in the G5 that goes. I want to see Taggart get his revenge. My dream bowl game is FAU vs FSU in a NY6 bowl game.

We’re recruiting like we’re one of the best if not the best G5 team in the country. This class could end up being a top 5 if not better G5 class. And Deion’s son will bring us an incredible amount of publicity. Things like that don’t happen by accident. I know one thing. All this Debby Downer ridiculous talk goes nowhere. So we should be upset more alums aren’t excited to see UAB? Even I don’t want to go but I do. And what did I say an upset and a top 25 ranking and the ball is rolling. I never said it’s going to be a ridiculously short process. I don’t understand the negativity. Then it’s like oh Taggart can recruit but we don’t know about his coaching bc of FSU. It’s funny how many people here didn’t even like Taggart a couple months ago. All you had to do was look at his staff. If he keeps this class his tenure is already a success. Again, let’s position ourselves as the top G5 team in the state. Debbie Downers can marvel at UCF’s donations. Memo: they’re still G5.

The day we start beating P5 opponents, average 25k fans and have undefeated seasons and get at least one week in the top 25; let's talk about it.
The recruiting is showing glances of a nice future but to say FAU is one of the greatest G5 programs?

In the past few years we have been one of the best G5 teams.  To the best, but top 5 or so. And I love it. If we move up, awesome. If not, keep dominating and I’ll be more than happy.

Good perspective NJOWL.  I am not being a Debbie Downer - just trying to be realistic.  I am very excited about the caliber of HS recruit we are landing, and I am also very positive on the entire staff that has been assembled.  But because we have a commitment from Deon's son (who by the way has a lower recruiting rating than Robison did), I don't think that immediately translates to big P5 upsets, sold out crowds, a NY6 bowl game, and an invitation to join the SEC - the kid hasn't even signed yet, so that seems like some exaggerated expectations (especially on a high school kid).  If the rating equates to that, wouldn't Robison have already led us to the Promise Land???

Again, getting top recruits, winning C-USA titles, and getting to bowl games should be the goal.  With sustained success, interest in the program should increase leading to more fans, more donations, and bigger things down the road.  Right now it is unrealistic to think FAU is on the precipice of "moving up" in my opinion.  There are schools like UCF and even App State who have won bigger games and have been consistent (on the field, in their fundraising, and with far superior attendance numbers).  So do I think FAU is a top 10 G5 football program now - I'd say yes.  Do I think there are several others who would be more attractive if realignment happened soon - I'd say yes again.  Do I think FAU can get there with a few more spectacular seasons - that is absolutely a yes!
