Observations: Marshall 2020

Post

This situation has been tough for Taggart. A QB who’s on the O’Brien list who I think had NFL all pro talent is gone. Then he loses both the tackles.

It’s going to be very hard to win if Ettiene and Robinson don’t come back. While it’s impossible to replace Bryant, I don’t think we have great pass catching TE’s. That’s why it was huge when we got a goodlooking TE for the 2021 class who might as well play right away. I thought we had a baseball player be a TE. That’s a position where I’m not sure Peterson is a good enough pass catcher. It would be nice to see what some of the guys lower on the depth chart could do.

And it’s a lot of new receivers. It’s good that some of them have good numbers at their previous schools.

If transfer receivers and TE’s didn’t make any big plays at their previous school it’s a bad sign. One thing I think is true is if a guy was terrible at P5 he will be terrible at G5. Fortunately we got some receivers who did put up some numbers like the guys that are doing well now.

I thought the recievers played well. Not many drops and they were getting open.

What I thought we could do after Charlotte was kind of go ‘95 Nebraska on everyone. We could’ve done what we did that last drive and just run it down people’s throats with the OL and Irvin as the TE. Make them stop it 4 times. And sometimes pass it to The tall receivers. But with Ettiene and Robinson out the drop off was big. And Irvin was out too. And if they come back, it might not be easy to be back in dominant form for the game.

Now it has to be a lot more passing. I don’t know how we’re going to score if Ettiene and Robinson aren’t back. To have Irvin gone too, and still have the RB’s have a good ypc proved how good we are. But it’s going to be tough. We could’ve had a top 10 rushing attack this year.

Thought the WR's played very well, Chase made a ton of plays on the ball. But we neeeeddddd Ettiene and Robinson back big time, also UTSA's D Line is nothing compared to UTSA's just get any one of the RB's going and the game is over.

He has to connect on deep balls to open the D.

In the second quarter, when he connected on some intermediate passes, the run game opened.

The offense third and fourth down were 8-18, which is substantial, considering everything.

The online has been mostly up and down even with the starters.

They struggled in short-yardage vs. UNCC. Hopefully, they get better as the years move along like last year.

Agree Shane but that IS too many 3rd downs! Need better production on 1st and 2nd downs as well. But then that was Marshall D we were facing with BOTH starting OT's out!

We are in the 21st century and we have seen every type of play call, scenario and also can integrate old school tactics with analytics. We played hard but the D cannot carry the team all the time.  The D will win us at most another 2 games and the others we need the Offense to get it going or they will equate to losses.

I’m not sold on Tronti’s arm, Chase had to jump like Randy Moss to catch some of those terrible passes.  I say we change and implement a triple option.  Tronti is great at running and maybe can thrive in an offense like that.  We are now in the 70’s ranked overall according to USA Today. We need consistency, I’m getting Partridge vibes with Taggart so far. I know we need time and he can recruit but so can Partridge. I just don’t like Taggart calling plays period.

Our D is super legit we are probably 2 back door td’s from a lower points per game allowed and I’m sure ranked up there nationally.  Leavitt is the real deal.  I think we beat UTSA but barely.

The offense needs to be tailored to Tronti's strength and obviously after this Marshall game throwing is not his strength, I agree we need to run some type of option with some easy short read passes thrown in there. This just shows you how talented Chris Robison really was.

I do 100% agree that the O needs to go to the PLAYERS strengths and abilities! If we have to do a Navy thing - DO IT! Just put some points on the board to help the D before they wear down!

Willie also pointed out how many guys played out of position and how little practice they got.

They tried to jam a game plan in with 48 hours of practice.

This led to some of the confusion getting lined up.

App State has scored over 35 in every game this year except when they played MU and only put up 7.
