Observations: Montgomery Bowl

Post

This season was indeed one of the weirdest seasons  to date, but the most 2020 thing happened when Robison was dismissed off the team.  We had our moments and as an FAU we were fortunate to watch games in person and see what the future holds.

A few things I noticed and I bring these up as a seasoned fan of college football and a die hard fan of FAU.  The moment I saw we were going to play Memphis I knew we were not going to win unless CR was walking through the door and he didn’t lol.  Not having McCarthy, Brice and Willie Wright hurt but we still fought. The line jumped a from -8 to -9 before game time indicating a for sure loss for us.
If McCarthy and those others played maybe we do slightly better but the problem all year has been the offense.

A few things to note as I went both the Boca bowl and Montgomery Bowl and each bowl was night and day.  Going Bowling is an experience and I feel the Montgomery bowl was  very poorly planned, and was not desirable for fans to attend to. I’m not sure if we had a choice but if we did in the future traveling to someplace easier for fans to go to after Covid would be more ideal. Did anyone notice FAU did not have the signature Bowl patches, just seemed inauthentic.  There was issues getting into the stadium as your ticket isn’t scan someone looks at it and let’s you in lol. The Boca Bowl is a better bowl fan wise, and is really becoming one of the more exciting games for G5 teams.  We need to position ourselves to go to fun bowls where our fan base can travel and enjoy.  This helps with growth of our following.  My point essentially is CUSA is trash, most of the teams got bowl invites are 0-3 so far getting killed and the CUSA champion can’t even get a bowl game, very shameful.

We need a QB period, we came so far with Kiffin if we have another Partridge year next year it negates what Kiffin did for our program.  It will kill the upward trend of our program. I keep reading we don’t have the personal and stuff  and maybe next year. No, a head coach brings out the best in his players, the 5’6 guy plays like he’s 6’4 because the coach instills heart and drive to compete at your best.  I didn’t see Willie rallying the troops it was more Leavitt and Kevin Patrick yelling, patting guys on the back and  that matters.  Kiffin is an introvert but you know what he’s a savant of the game and something to respect. There’s a reason people keep signing him giving him millions. If Leavitt leaves Taggart is screwed.

There is no play calling creativity I saw a play called a run right into nowhere, that is not adaptation.  We did not evolve as the season continued we regressed, I know injuries hurt us but still even with our guys healthy the play-calling is not the best to achieve what they can do. If I’m a player and I’m risking myself I would opt out or whatever as well, as an rb I would risk getting injured on these pop Warner calls and  it’s not worth it. Tronti and Posey are package change the pace QB’s they did their best but I feel coaching failed them, they tried their hardest. Without Tronti’s fumble this Game is a one score game, and if we punched that 4 and 1 it’s a ballgame.  The defense did everything it could, the offense is what failed us this year and lack of good head coaching.

Ok soo next year we have spring and fall practice and get a QB and transfer portal dudes and stack up, what will the excuse be when we run up the middle with the same mediocre play calls down 35-0 at Uf in the 2nd quarter. My point is there is no heart,  we lost it somewhere and we better find it fast.  Our pal Chun has us scheduled  against Uf, Af and GSU ha can we survive that?

I am hopeful we can get better,  we can’t afford to lose at this time frame.  Our facilities are top notch, our location is perfect and our goals are realistic in the sense of going forward to a possible new conference.  Our fan base is growing I go to Publix or bestbuy and I see people with FAU shirts.  I thank Kiffin for that because his name was our marketing tool  we no longer have that soo we just need to win and that promotes exposure. As I walked off my flight from Ft. Lauderdale the Pilot saw my fau hat and said GO Owls!  I said the same and it was the one bright spot of my trip.  My point is we are growing and Partridge years are not acceptable  anymore, we are becoming a national brand we just need a Coastal like year and we will take off.  We have goals now, and if we follow through them the skys the limit. Do you think next year will be better? Do you think Taggart can take us to the next level?

Believe I have posted this a few times in other places but Robison wasn't dismissed from the team. You don't enter the portal when you're dismissed.

Just want to make sure this is set straight.

That was an amazing post. I don’t think Taggart is a good enough play caller to excel at a P5 level. Can his play calling dominate at G5 is what we will find out. I think we had a lot more talent on offense that some people might think.

Once we have a season like Coastal Carolina well into the top 25 that will get tie ball rolling as far as being an attractive candidate to move up conferences.

I think it’s a semantics thing. Example: https://www.si.com/college/georgia/news/2019-uga-football-olb-brenton-cox-dismissed-from-team-enter-transfer-portal

If so I must have missed the article on Robison…

The play by play guy from The ESPN broadcast Of the Bowl game said that Robison was dismissed from the team.

I’m assuming he wasn’t allowed to play here anymore because of the legal issues. Oh well it’s over with.

It still makes absolutely no sense that we weren’t told of the reason he wasn’t playing. I guess the possibly legal repercussions were so great all the insiders had to keep quiet that he was unofficially not welcome back for 2020 and beyond.

You hit the nail on the head here. We can talk about lack of depth and talent all we want but those things don’t just leave from one year to the next. Look at the Kiffin teams and specifically, last year. We were down a bunch of guys in our bowl game yet our backups dominated SMU’s starters. I think this has a lot more to do with coaching than we would all like to admit. Kiffin is a rockstar coach and Willie is not. It’s just that simple. Not saying Willie can’t win big here but the regression at the end of the season was painful to watch. It seemed like after that FIU game, we were ready to just run through the rest of our schedule. Instead, the O got worse and never got back on track after that. That falls squarely on coaching and specifically, the guy calling the plays. We are good enough to contend for a title in C-USA at this point year in and year out at this point but, what about the next step? Given that we have one of the premier G5 Bowls played in our own stadium every year, it feels like college football is begging for us to become that next G5 break through team. C-USA feels like it’s been the worst FBS conference for a few years now we need to have a breakthrough at some point to the next level. If Kiffin was still here, maybe that could have happened this year with a watered down schedule and we go undefeated. Who knows all I’m saying is I feel like the program needs to show drastic improvement next year otherwise, we will be back to where we were in 2016. Feels like we took a step back, maybe it was a transitional year to a new regime but overall, I’m disappointed in how the season ended.

The play by play guy is incorrect and doesn't know what he's talking about, I am 100% positive there was no briefing on how they should address Chris Robison in pre-game prep.

But, like you said it is over with, and i'm done with trying to keep this one between the rails. FAU's official position until a week or so ago was that he was not with the program and could possibly return.

People can think what they want to, they will anyway.

Final thought: no one has a right to know personal information about an amateur athlete.

I agree that we should’ve done better with the players that were available. It doesn’t take the greatest offensive mind in football to score more than 10 points with the personnel we had against what honestly looked like a lousy Memphis defense.

The players looked great out there. They looked like they were in amazing shape.

Right before 4th and goal from the 1 Charles told Taggart to cal a run play for him. You could see him motioning to the sideline asking Taggart to give him the ball.

It doesn’t matter if he should’ve gotten the ball. That showed a lack of respect for Taggart. And what does that say.

It kind of seemed ridiculous that he got 3 P5 transfers to start at receiver. Taggart has been doing things that could lose the team’s respect since he’s been here.

Chase was benched except for  couple plays with the throw it up to him to the end zone play.

The fact Chase was benched the last 2 games for poor play should tell anyone everything they need to know about these failed 5 star transfers.

The only thing I’m certain of is Robison was NOT kicked off the team. To me, that means he wasn’t dismissed. Not sure we will get the full story, and not our business
