We got a 2.5M buyout from Kiffin/Ole-Miss and I'm curious if we still have that money around.

So I guess if we fire him this year - it would cost 2.5M, whereas next year would be 1.6M.

Don’t count on it.
We still have a stadium that is not paid for yet!
Money goes quickly in D1 schools with all of the sports involved.

Payments are made over time within the University pay cycle, and not due all at once.
Three years = 36 monthly, or 72 bi-weekly payments
Two years = 24 payments, or 48 bi-weekly payments
One year = 12 payments, or 24 bi-weekly payments
Also, based on the language, if chosen, the reassignment option would require having to be on campus and perform duties. That said, when that no longer happens, there is no further money due.
So FAU has the upper hand in any situation like this. Yes, you can get paid, but you'll have to work the new job and tough it out. Unless FAU just wants to just say goodbye all at once and pay out fully. However, I highly doubt that would happen as a gesture of kindness to the tune of $2.25M.
Regardless, it is not likely any coach reassigned would do it. I can personally recall other coaches who have been reassigned, and they all left very quickly (the above would be why). One in particular was reassigned to campus rec and had to administrate basketball games outside on blacktop in the summer. That was very short lived, and also probably very uncomfortable to be dealing with random students while once a head coach in 105' heat index conditions.

Coach Taggart aside, some extra perspective here…

Crazy that these contracts are not results oriented for this much money.
Teambeer is the most knowledgeable FAU sports fan I know, way smarter than me.

Maybe 1.6 million if we fire him in November since we'd have to pay the remainder of November. I like the way our contract is written because we don't have to pay him anything if he finds a new job - which is way better than what FSU is doing with covering his salary on top of ours
