Notables
Ave Maria University is a small private college in Ave Maria, Fl that participates in the Sun Conference along side Warner, who the Owls hosted in their home opener back on November 17th.
With an enrollment of just 1,291 students the institution was founded by Domino's Pizza founder, and former Detroit Tigers owner, Tom Monaghan. The name Gyrene references a member of the United States Marine Core, of which Monaghan is a past service member.
The Gyrenes lost to Florida College 55-51 on Tuesday night, giving them a split for the home-and-home series with the Falcons this season. A 3-of-15 effort behind the arc was the contributing factor in the contest, and 16.1% below their season average there.
Three starters from the last season's contest against the Owls return for Ave Maria, although only Wendell Powell (6 PT, 5 RB) and Nate Krimsky (0 PT, 3RB) are expected to remain in that role Sunday.
AMU's current leading scorer Jelani Bonner (14.1 ppg), who is probable to join them, was 2-of-6 for five points in his 22 minutes of time on The Burrow's hardwood. Bonner has improved his output significantly since then, and is now seven points per game over his 2013-14 mark.
Ave Maria was picked to finish 8th in the Sun Conference for 2014-15 by the nine league Coaches - one spot lower than last year which offered 10 members.
FAU at a Glance:
Offense - 60.5 PPG, 41.0% FG, 30.1% 3PT
Defense - 64.5 PGA, 43.6% FGA, 19.6% 3PTA
Rebounding - 32.0 PG Team, 34.5 PG Opponents
Notables
Marquan Botley registered the 5th 20 point showing of his career in FAU's 74-61 loss to SEC foe Georgia last Sunday. He also set a new mark for field goals made as an Owl with nine.
Kelvin Penn, who Head Coach Michael Curry has stated he wants to see as more involved in the offense, was perfect at 100% from the floor behind a 5-of-5 effort.
If the conference didn't have a 3.0 MPG requirement, Penn would have been tied at the time with WKU's Justin Johnson for 4th in C-USA in field goal percentage at 66.7% overall.
Jackson Trapp leads Florida Atlantic on the year with seven steals, and nabbed a career high four of those against the Bulldogs. With 25 regular season games still remaining, he's already at 33.3% of his 2013-14 total (21). Trapp scored 23 points against Ave Maria in the squad's previous meeting.
Despite falling behind last season's mark of 33.4% from long range so far, the Owls are still connecting on more attempts than the competition for the season. This can be attributed to a stingy 19.6% 3PT FGA, which is number one amongst Conference USA Teams.
