Florida Atlantic University senior Olivia MBala took on six defenders and picked her way the length of the pitch to net the game-winning goal as the Owls defeated Miami 2-1 on Sunday.
"I am very proud of the effort today and we found a way to be successful on the road against a really good opponent,” FAU Head Coach Patrick Baker said. “Miami is loaded with talent and play collectively at a high level. We knew we would have to absorb pressure at times and be good on the counter attack."
FAU (3-2-1) took a lead in the 23rd minute as Hildur Hauksdottir netted her first career goal on an assist by Gabriella Sosa. The Iceland native scored from 18 yards out to the upper 90 to put the Owls on top.
Just before halftime, Miami (2-4-0) saw Emily Auld chip in a pass from Shannon McCarthy to even the game at 1-1 at the intermission. The FAU defense allowed only that shot over the last 25 minutes of the first half.
"Hildur took an early first-half chance well, which gave us a much needed boost,” Baker said. “Unfortunately we lost the lead with 1:07 left before halftime and could have easily felt sorry for ourselves. We mentioned some key points at half-time and the players continued to perform well in the heat.”
MBala then saw an opportunity in the second half and mustered the energy to go the length of the field for her first goal of the season.
“Just before the 64th minute, Olivia made a tremendous individual run and hammered a goal from 20 yards out,” Baker said. “She showed great individual effort to have the ball in our half and then score one for that ages that proved to be the game winner."
FAU goalkeeper Sydney Drinkwater made two of her four saves over the final 17 minutes to seal the victory for the Owls. Sammy Lujan, Asta Arnadottir and Taylor Townsend also recorded shots on the day for FAU.
"After finishing our game on Friday after midnight versus UCF, I was worried how much we would have in the tank today,” Baker said. “We used everything today and a little extra to be fortunate to win today. Miami will win its fair share this year and hopefully we can build on this result moving into another big weekend versus Jacksonville and Brown."
The Owls go on the road again Friday, Sept. 12 to face Jacksonville.

It would be the only score of the night.
Florida Atlantic (3-3-1) nipped the host in shots 15-14 for the contest, and were paced by Hildur Hauksdottir and Taylor Townsend, who registered three each.
The Owls also held an 11-4 advantage in corner kicks, but could capitalize therein.
The team will next play host to Brown on Sunday at 1:00 PM.

Maddie Pung proved to be a hero as she scored the game-winner to give Florida Atlantic University a 1-0 overtime win against Brown on Sunday. Her first career goal went in the net in the 94th minute to keep the Owls undefeated at home.
The FAU defense was stifling on the day, allowing Brown (2-2) only two shots, one of which was on goal, and zero corner kicks.
The Owls (4-3-1) took 14 shots in regulation, but were unable to sneak any by Brown’s goalkeeper Mallory Yant who made four saves. Claire Emslie was relentless, taking five shots on the day, and freshman Asta Arnadottir notched four of her own.
With six newcomers on the pitch in overtime, a goal kick was headed into Brown territory by freshman Sammy Lujan. There, it was picked up by newcomer Taylor Townsend who split a pair of defenders and setup the goal for Pung. The Oshkosh, Wisc. native stuck her right foot out for a chip shot that went over Yant and just cleared the crossbar to drop into the back of the net.
“It felt so unreal,” Pung said. “Taylor did a great job. She hustled and turned the corner and played it right to my foot.”
“We enjoyed a lot of possession time and opportunities and didn’t really get much to materialize,” FAU Head Coach Patrick Baker said. “It was nice to see a lot of newcomers step up when the game was in the balance.”
The Owls stay at home to host CSU Bakersfield and Wofford on Friday, Sept. 19 and Sunday, Sept. 21 respectively.

Hildur Hauksdottir's winner in the 11th minute of the first half off an assist from Taylor Townsend gave Florida Atlantic the early lead.
But they couldn't find the net thereafter.
Ironically, the Owls outshot the Roadrunners 27-7 for the tilt, with Claire Emslie and Hauksdottir each posting a half dozen to pace the Owls offensive attack. A combined effort of five of the duo's attempts were on target.
However, CSU Bakersfield received a solid performance in the net, registering seven saves.
While becoming somewhat of a playing trend, the match marked FAU's fourth of the season that has seen extra frames, and the second displaying a pair of them.
Reaching the mid-point of a six game home stand, Florida Atlantic will face-off against Southern Conference opponent Wofford on Sunday at 1:00 PM.

The Florida Atlantic University women’s soccer team was aggressive all afternoon, but it took 103 minutes before Hildur Hauksdottir was able to find the back of the net to defeat Wofford in double overtime on Sunday.
FAU (5-4-1) has already matched its win total from 2013 and is off to its best start since the 2007 season. The Owls did not allow Wofford to take a shot in the final 33 minutes of the game and gave up just one shot in the final 81 minutes of play.
After a quiet first half by both teams, FAU went on the attack right out of the gate in the second frame. The Owls posted 17 second-half shots en route to their 26 total for the game.
In the second overtime, senior Olivia MBala sent a ball into the zone to freshman Asta Arnadottir. The Iceland native found her fellow countrywoman Hauksdottir open in front of the net and sent it her way, threading the needle between two defenders. Hauksdottir was able to stop the ball, taking on Wofford goalkeeper Shonte Campbell one-on-one and found the back of the net on the left side for the game-winner.
The goal marked Hauksdottir’s second in as many games and third in her freshman campaign.
The Owls stay at home to open Conference USA play against Charlotte and Old Dominion on Sept. 26 and 28, respectively.

Freshman forward Asta Arnadottir netted the lone score in the 78th minute of play, which was her first collegiate goal.
The 49ers held the Owls to just three shots in the first period, but that defensive mark would fall sharply in the second as Florida Atlantic (6-4-1, 1-0) upped their performance to a dozen.
Arnadottir, Hildur Hauksdottir, and Dani Dangremond registered three shots each in the victory.
Goalkeeper Sydney Drinkwater had four saves in the net for the Owls.
FAU will host Old Dominion at 1:00 PM on Sunday.

The match remained tied until the 79th minute when the Blue Raiders (5-6-2, 2-2-1) struck from 23 yards out on a ball that bounced off the right post before finding its way into the net.
Not going down easy, the Owls earned five corner kicks, which resulted in three shots, during the final 6:09 of play.
Each team managed 16 total attempts for the match, but MTSU edged FAU 5-4 in those on target.
Taylor Townsend led the Owls (6-6-2, 1-2-1) with four while Asta Arnadottir and Olivia Mbala added three each.
FAU will take on UAB at 2:00 PM on Sunday before returning to the home field next weekend.
