FAU men's golf head coach thread

Not sure what kind of response this will elicit but let's throw it out there anyway.

FAU recently announced that men's golf head coach Angelo Sands will retire at the conclusion of the 2016-2017 season after 11 years with the Owls.

Among his accomplishments were the creation of the FAU Slomin Autism Championship, 35 top-five finishes and many elite golfers, per the release.

Anybody have thoughts on who to replace him with? Being in Boca Raton, golf seems like the sort of thing FAU should be known for…

Yup, both golf and tennis. I would like to see the college and athletics get some tie-ins with the local famous clubs and athletes like Chris Evert and the Evert Tennis Acadamy

The tennis team is pretty good.

From what i heard many players did not like FAU's golf coach.

For golf FAU needs a young motivated coach trying to make a name and not some old golf club pro.

It's gonna be tough down here, there is a ton of talent but in case you haven't noticed, we don't have a facility. The team used to play and practice out of Ocean breeze for gods sake, which was a goat track.

The major players in D1 golf have their own courses and facilities and they're too notch. I've practiced and played at Clemson and it's insanely nice for a college course. Now, FAU isn't going to build a golf course and practice facility BUT let's at least try to do what Nova has done (btw they've won a bunch of d2 national titles in golf) they have a direct relationship with Grande Oaks and play and practice there daily. Whoever comes in needs to get us hooked into a good facility (Boca West would be ideal given the size and practice facility) so we can recruit some talented guys.

We may want to offer a little more than the $38k Angelo has been making as the coach.

Lastly, golf is a lot like tennis at the college level, the coaches recruit and set lineups but don't instruct really, the kids at this level all have their own swing coaches, so they aren't required to be top instructors, just someone that can get kids on the team.

It would be cool if the city let FAU use the new course as their home course or we had some partnership or involvement with the new course.

I just feel being in south Florida we can find young motivated pro who wants this for name recognition.

Are you referring to the purchase and renovation of Ocean Breeze by the city/recreation district?

One thing people may not realize is that I think Golf has ONE scholarship to go through the team. ONE. As in, we split up a couple thousand dollars across the entire team. So there's that.

It has been disappointing that we're in Boca and we're consistently near the bottom of the conference. But when you think about it, the TOP golfers aren't even playing in college, they're going straight on an amateur tour and then the next level of golfers are going where they get the money. We need to invest in the program a bit more and I bet we'd have good results.

Lastly, HEY! I liked Ocean Breeze, lol. Tough to find a better deal at the time with golf and drinks included.
