Letter from Coach Schnellenberger on Stadium

the fact we had the land, lending was cheapest ever and there was a waiting list for the dorms, i think its 5 years too late. I'm not saying we needed 40k dome, but what we're building, a 30k steel stadium could have been done by 2005.

its done, its over. i just don't want anyone patting themselves on the back.

Re: Letter from Coach Schnellenberger on Stadium

I spoke with BOT member Armand Grossman at the MSU game two years ago. He was frustrated with the stadium situation because the economy had turn sour and committee assigned to find funding could not get a commitment. At that time, they were looking for enough large donations and naming rights to borrow the rest. Mr Grossman said they found numerous parties interested. Just when they thought they had a commitment, the economy worsened and the party backed out. That's what frustrated me about this. Had the BOT not tabled this for a year or two, the funding process could have started before the recession when the DOW was up around 14000. AS we know, it took two years to find the funding and finally the development rights to the dorms were sold. MJ Saunders did get the university to kick in $20mil. Good for her.

I truly believe FAU will prosper as a traditional campus like it never has before and it was a good decision to go with the Innovation Village.

I guess the reason it seems so bad is we had to play at Lockhart…you cant sell Lockhart to a recruit…would you even want to go from playing at Boca High's stadium to Lockhart? whereas USF has RJS to show off

Not exactly.  USF has the Big East affiliation to show off.  The fact that they play in a pro stadium, off campus, would be a MUCH bigger deal for them if they were in the SBC or CUSA.

Actually RJS is pretty much our number one recruiting tool… While the Big East is BCS, it's not the powerhouse of football that we'd like to be affiliated with(ACC would be perfect). We'd love to have an OCS but the closest comparison to what we would need is something akin to Minnisota's new stadium. It would have to seat atleast 55k with room to expand and our fan base has been spoiled by RJS so little things like chair backs and nice big concourses are pretty much going to have to be required. Right now there really isn't anywhere on campus that we could build something of that size that would be accessible… we're still looking at probably 10+ years of RJS before anything is done there… unless someone wins the powerball.  ;D

That being said, FAU's stadium looks great and will greatly enhance your program. Hell… it's not even built yet and it's better than the erector set up at that joke of a school in Orlando… I heard there's been talk of us possibly opening the new stadium… I for one would love to be there.

Not really.  no matter how cheap money was, you have to have the means (and fan base) to pay the loan.  It's kinda like all those people that made $40k per year and bought $500k houses…money is cheap but it doesn't make sense.

And we'd love to host USF. What have you heard? All we know is that it's been tossed out there, don't know how USF has reacted or if you guys even have an opening.
