Burrowing owls and gopher tortoises live there, so they can't put anything on that area.

they are going to pay to relocate them…….

I think the cost was $10,000 per burrow to remove them. I don't think FAU is going to want to spend more money than it has to in order to get this stadium. Moving owls at 10k a pop just so people can have some extra parking is probably not in the cards.

I've heard rumors that the long patch we're referring to is eventually going to be home to the Greek Row, however, and I know how you guys feel about that but I also know they have a committee right now looking at the Greek Villages at similar universities. One model that looks like it might work for FAU is at Western Carolina University. A description from their press release about it:

The complex will feature 16- and 20-bed units for larger student organizations, with smaller groups to be part of a multi-organizational building consisting of three- and four-bedroom apartments. Each house will have a parlor, residential kitchen, public bathroom, lockable storage space and state-of-the-art technology. A centrally located commons building will provide meeting rooms, reception space and laundry facilities for all residents of the village. The commons building also will house an apartment and office for the village director

And the webpage for their Greek Life ("Village" link is on the right): The Village

Last time I was on campus, February,  I went to all the places I used to see the owls, and did not see a single one.  I looked around the student apts., and the long strip we are talking about.  I saw a bunch of their perches (the PVC "T's"), but no actual owls.  As far as using the area as parking, the first thing to check is whether or not that area has been designated as a conservation easement or preservation area.  If this area has been recorded with the county as one of those two, then nothing can be done.  If the are has just been left alone by choice, then yes, you can move the owls and gopher tortoises.  Cost will depend on who FAU hires, and where you are going to put the animals, on-site of off-site.  I haven't done any burrowing owl jobs yet, but I have completed several tortoise relocation jobs.  If you can keep the animals on-site, your fees are much lower.  Off-site relocations cost much more because the place that will accept the animals, usually a ranch, can charge whatever they want.  The last site we dealt with wanted $1500/tortoise, plus the expenses of digging the tortoises out(backhoe rental, operator, two biologists), it adds up pretty quick.

Or just call Bill Murray like diehard said. ;D

Well, when you deal with the big name companies, you get the big fees to go with it.  I end up cleaning up a lot of the big guy's mistakes for a lot less money.  But a school or a hospital would have little confidence going with a small company like ours, so the big guys usually get those jobs.

Back to the topic though,  Who owns that strip of land between the ditch by the student apts. and the apartments across the street?  It would be a long walk, but I garauntee some enterprising soul would start selling parking spots out there.

I hear where you are going…and there won't be a $"5 parking" cardboard sign in action :)

It's state land though…
