Just an idea of what a 14 team playoff could look like, 10 conference champs and 4 at-large

Florida Atlantic University Owls
2007 Sun Belt Football Champions 2007 New Orleans Bowl Champions 2008 Motor City Bowl Champions 2011 Sun Belt Basketball Champions No Bowls without Owls

The ONLY real and fair way to run a Championship at any level. Inclusive of all Conference CHAMPIONS plus the ability to have 4 at large berths, even though I prefer ONLY Conference Champions. Two years in a row the current system has entries who not only did NOT win their Conference - they did NOT even win their DIVISION!

I completely agree that there should be an expansion. The only thing that could happen negatively is that other games that would be key matchups throughout the season may be viewed as less relevant because people just want to wait and see what happens in the playoff instead.

While I like more "good" football (versus what we often see in current bowl games), I don't see anyway we would get to this - no matter how fair it is or how much sense it would make.  I expect a move to 6 or 8 teams in the next few years, but that is mainly going to be to make sure they include at least the champ of all 5 of the P5 and leave some room in case there is an outsider who is undefeated.  It is all about money, and why would anybody in the P5 agree to something that would allow "outsiders" to get some of their financial windfall???

And in the case with the 14 teams above, a committee would still seed everybody and we probably would have been playing a #4 or #5 seed (as the 13th or 14th seeded team).  Absolute best we would have been is a #12 (against the #6) since there were only 3 teams who did not have a CFP ranking (us, Toledo, and Troy).  That would have meant those 3 teams would land matchups with Alabama, Ohio State, and Wisconsin based on the final CFP poll.

100% True Owlsdad. The current illegal (IMHO) Power 5 cartel will NEVER expand unless forced to legally just like the Big12 could have EASILY added UCF and UCF last time but instead strung them all out and then kicked 'em all in the teeth! Those 2 schools are way better long term than Iowa St., that's for sure!

The "money" comes from the conference TV contracts.  This format woudn't really effect the P5 schools negatively.

Teambeer is the most knowledgeable FAU sports fan I know, way smarter than me.
