Titans Open Preseason Slate Saturday; Keep an Eye Out for Rusty

Then the Titans have LOTS of stupid fans for blaming him for that debacle. The O line DID NOT BLOCK  for Chris Johnson that game either.

I believe he finished 7/10 for 70+ yards.

Yep…Rusty was 7-of-10 for 76 yards, and had a 7.6 YPA average…his rating was the highest of all of the Tennessee QB's @ 92.1.

Stick that in your pipe and smoke it Titans fans!

I watched his part of the game, and I thought he looked good. He was 7 for 10 and had at least one drop. It's great to see one of the truly nice guys have a nice evening. If he doesn't fit into the Titans' plans, perhaps another team will be intrigued. Great news, as well, about the baby on the way.

Re: Titans Open Preseason Slate Saturday; Keep an Eye Out for Rusty

This may help to explain a little bit why he's not getting more game time:

=====

"At least one published photo taken during the Houston game shows Smith yelling at offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger following an interception, which makes you wonder how the rookie handled his tough afternoon.

In any event, here’s how Heimerdinger evaluated Smith a couple of days before the end of the season, when asked if there was cause for optimism about the young quarterback:

'Yeah, I don’t know. I see some good things. I see some bad things. I see some good things some days in practice. Then I see some days where his release isn’t quite as good. I think he gets lazy sometimes.

'That’s going to be a work in progress. A lot of it is going to be how hard he wants to work at it and change some things … There is a future for Russ, but there are some things we’ve got to change.'"

=====

Other people have noted he needs to work on his footwork, release and progression.

At the same time, he's a "team leader" guy who "knows the defense and protections as well as the coaches." I think that's partly why they keep him, although recent articles have started to suggest that keeping him on may be a luxury that the Titans can't afford.

I have high hopes for Rusty and maybe moving to another team might be a better deal for him… as far as playing time goes. But where would he go?

Dolphins suck! Why not right here.

But if Hasselback continues to "struggle' up there who knows? Titans are starting Locker the next preseason game. Maybe Hasselbeck and his salary won't be sustainable up there on the bench. Then Rusty gets the No. 2 spot.

Would be GREAT, but Not likely, and agree with this prognosis:

QB– In: (3) Jake Locker, Matt Hasselbeck, Rusty Smith. Out: Nick Stephens. Analysis: The only question here is whether the Titans decide to keep two quarterbacks and release Smith. Despite appearing in all 16 games last season, Hasselbeck is injury-prone. Though a potential release of Smith could help the Titans' depth at another spot, it might be too risky of a move.

Not to mention he (Hasselbeck) sucked in the opening game. 2 pics (one for a TD) would have gotten Rusty cut. If he improves he wil start. If he does not or gets hurt, maybe sticks as a REAL expensive back-up...who knows.

Rusty seeing some time Now against Tampa with the Titans up 20-7…he's already 2-of-2 for 29 yards!

On a side note:

Locker was 4-of-11 for 21 yards with an INT.
