Sun Belt & C-USA Results - Early 2020 Look

Post

Resurrecting an old forum…

Why is this not in the C-USA forum?

Because it doesn't deserve to be.

The Sun Belt is off to an impressive start, and C-USA can't really say the same:

  • South Alabama beat USM (at home) 32-21 causing the Golden Eagle's head man to resign.
  • MTSU could not score against Army (42-0), but ULM did and held them to a touchdown less offensively.
  • ULL (+13) beat a ranked ISU team 31-14 today on the road.
  • Arkansas State (+15) beat Kansas State today at home.
  • South Alabama (+11) is currently beating Tulane at home by two scores in the 3rd.

Not putting much on UTSA's win over Texas State, because State choked a normal win by missing an extra point. They were FAVORED.

The lone aside to this cross league comparison "trend" is Marshall's romp over EKU - which is simply a bad team.

We need to completely dismantle GSU next weekend to make a statement and help our conference get back on track.

They beat Campbell 27-26 today down 33 players. Let that sink in.

I tip my hat to the sun belt conference. FAU is officially in game week. Can't wait for my first look at the 2020 Owls.

It makes me think why FAU with all the talent they have and conference championships + dominating C-USA teams to some extent; has never been able to pull a real upset.
Yes FAU beat Minnessota but I believe the gophers finished that year 1-11, so that does not count.
Was beating SMU considered an upset?

We haven't had the "big name" upset, but we haven't had that many realistic opportunities unless USF years back and UCF these past two years count, and I don't really think they do. Otherwise we have played big boy ranked teams when we realistically didn't have that much of a chance in these most competitive recent years. SMU is a "former name" and were ranked for a lot of last year. I believe that was technically an "upset" so probably our highest profile win considering it was on ABC also. I'll take it with the recent success though.

There is 1 game that might be a big game that we had a chance although it didnít turn out good.

In 2005 we hosted Oklahoma State at what now is Hard Rock Stadium. Oklahoma State ended up 4-7 that year. But it was the 2nd game of the year and they were 1-0 having beaten Montana St.†Also, Oklahoma State had been ranked a lot of times in 2003-2004 although they didnít finish either season ranked.†

The game was on ESPN2 and we had just given Kansas a respectable game losing 30-19. I was really excited but we lost 23-3. Weíve had chances to break through as far as 2005. That was a terrible season and we finished 2-9. We lost a game 3-0 in overtime that year. We have a chance in the coming years to finally get a signature win. We have beaten Minnesota. SMU was a big win too.

Unfortunately I was at that game and it was excruciating watching it live. It was clear very early on we weren't on that level at all. I remember there was a lot of optimism going into that Texas opening game in 08 and it was just awful.
