Florida Atlantic Dominates Glass in 79-67 Win Over North Texas

The Owls won their 11th straight Sun Belt home contest on Saturday afternoon in a 79-67 victory over North Texas.

The win keeps them undefeated against western division foes (4-0) for 2012-13.

Forward Chenise Miller posted her fourth double-double on the year for Florida Atlantic (10-7, 7-2) with 22 points and 14 rebounds (tie career high).

North Texas trailed 31-40 at the break, coming within four points on numerous occasion in the second half.

However, the Owls would close the win out with a 12-4 run over the final 5:12 of the contest.

Breana Turner notched a 17 point effort behind 7-of-8 shooting from the field.

Perimeter defense played a role for the Owls, who limited the Mean Green (7-11, 6-3) to just 23.1% for the game (3-of-13) from beyond the arc.

But rebounding proved the instrumental factor, with FAU taking advantage of a 52-35 mark which helped produced 11 more shot attempts.

Florida Atlantic next heads west to battle UALR on January 23rd. Tip-off time is 8:00 PM in Little Rock.

UALR Hands Owls Largest Margin of Defeat on the Year

In an ending uncharacteristic of the year's play thus far, the women's basketball team fell 77-45 tonight at Arkansas-Little Rock.

The Owls (10-8, 7-3) managed only a 3-of-19 effort from long range, and shot a paltry 28.8% overall from the field for the evening.

Rebounding played a key part in the loss, as UALR (12-7, 5-6) was a force to be reckoned with off the glass, out hauling the visitors 56-24 (20 offensive), while enjoying a 38-18 scoring advantage in the paint.

FAU trailed 47-21 at intermission, and was unable to make up any ground during the second half.

Kimberly Smith was FAU's lone player in double figures with 10 points, and Chenise Miller grabbed a squad best eight rebounds.

The Owls conclude their two game road trip against Arkansas State on Saturday at 6:00 PM.

CSS will air the game live.

Owls Miss Key Shots Down the Stretch in 86-90 Loss to ULM

Rebounding and accuracy played key roles on Wednesday night, as the Owls were defeated 90-86 by Louisiana-Monroe (5-15, 3-8) in a high scoring affair at FAU Arena.

The Owls shot a robust 47.1% from behind the arc, but gave up a 54-26 advantage in points in the paint to the visiting Warhawks, while dropping the battle off the glass 46-35 as well.

Down 48-51 at the break, FAU (10-10, 7-5) would trail by as many as eight points before rallying for the tie at 82-82 with 3:06 remaining. But four missed shots, and a pair of free throws, down the stretch prevented the comeback effort from coming to fruition.

Senior guard Breana Turner notched a career best 32 points, and sank 10-of-11 free throws on the evening for Florida Atlantic, who has now lost three straight, and five of their last seven contests.

Fellow back court members Takia Brooks and Briah Blakely were also in double figures with 12, and 10 points each.

FAU will next face Middle Tennessee on Saturday at 3:00 PM in The Burrow.

Re: 2012-13 FAU Women's Basketball Schedule

Owls hang tough, but drop another close one in a 67-70 loss to Middle Tennessee.

Game release via FAU WBB SID Dale Long:

The Florida Atlantic University women’s basketball team could not hold onto a 10-point second-half lead and suffered a 70-67 loss to Sun Belt Conference leader Middle Tennessee State University on Saturday, February 2 at the FAU Arena.

The Owls led 60-50 with 10:28 remaining, but the visiting Blue Raiders closed the game by outscoring their opponents by a 20-7 margin to take home the victory.

FAU (10-11, 7-6 Sun Belt) was paced by junior guard Kimberly Smith, who had 18 points by making four 3-point field goals. One of those long-range jump shots gave the team the double-digit second half lead.

Junior guard Takia Brooks added 17 points and junior forward Chenise Miller scored 13 points for Florida Atlantic.

Middle Tennessee (17-5, 12-1 Sun Belt) took its first lead since scoring the first two points of the game when Icelyn Elie put back a missed layup by KeKe Stewart with 1:56 left in the game. That basket gave the Blue Raiders a 66-65 lead.

FAU senior guard Breana Turner grabbed an Elie missed jumper with 58 seconds left. However, the Owls could not convert an answering basket on the next offensive possession.

Kortni Jones gave MTSU a 68-65 lead after making two free throws with 24 seconds left. Turner missed a 3-point field goal attempt with 12 seconds left and Jones grabbed the defensive rebound. Jones made two more free throws as part of her game-high 20 points to give the Blue Raiders a 70-65 advantage. Then, Brooks made a layup in the closing seconds for the Owls to cap the scoring.

In the first half, FAU took a 13-6 lead after Brook made a 3-pointer at the 13:06 mark. The lead grew to 10 points, 32-22, with 5:59 remaining in the half following another 3-point field goal from junior guard Latavia Dempsey.

Middle Tennessee used a 12-2 run over the next five minutes to come within 36-34 before a 3-point play by Brooks with three seconds left in the half gave the Owls a 39-34 halftime advantage.

With 20 points, Jones led four MTSU double-figure scorers. Ebony Rowe had 16 points, while Elie added 12 points and Laken Leonard scored 10 points.

FAU shot 45 percent from behind the 3-point arc, making nine of its 20 long-distance shot attempts.

The Owls returns to the court on Wednesday, February 6 at 6 p.m. for the first meeting of the season against FIU in Miami.
