2013 Sun Belt Men's Basketball Tournament Thread

I like how the team is starting to play….I like the bracket draw, things could break our way with some luck.  What I am nervous about is how horrible this team plays on the road…4-13.  They just don't like it, they like the Burrow.  Hopefully, they will make Hot Springs their home for 4 games.

Big chance for Jarvis to get that 1st conference tournament win on Friday! Would be dissapointing if we went down 1st round.

If we lost in the first round against Troy somebody will start flying a fire Jarvis banner around Boca.

If we go deep in the tourney, we'll all forget about this season and praise the team "because the tour eh is the only thing that counts"

BUT Dusky is right, if we bounce in the first round AGAIN then we have a serious problem…these guys better be peaking at the right time.

If we go deep…? Please don't place any hard earned money on that. Remember, we still have baseball.

G- Hunter Williams 10.3 ppg
G- Emil Jones 11.3 ppg
G- Deonata Jethroe 6.1 ppg
F- Ray Chambers 8.1 ppg

The series

FAU swept the Trojans during 2012-13 regular season play, but still trail at 12-19 overall.

Last time on the floor, the Owls saw four players score in double figures: Greg Gantt (23), Stefan Moody (15), Pablo Bertone (14, 4-of-4 3PT), and Jackson Trapp (11, 3-of-4 3PT). Florida Atlantic set season highs in both assists (22) and 3-pointers made (13).

Antoine Meyers' 15 points paced Troy, who out rebounded FAU 35-29, but was just 3-of-14 (21.4%) from long range themselves.

Owls at a Glance

Leading scorer Greg Gantt has averaged 24.5 ppg this season against Troy. But given Jordan McCoy's tender ankle, it may be Andre Mattison that holds the keys to a successful run in the Sun Belt Tournament.

Getting his first start of the season last Saturday, Mattison exploded for a career high night in both points and rebounds against Florida International.

"It was a great time for Andre to step up, he has never stopped working and preparing, and when he got the chance he made the most of it", said Coach Mike Jarvis of the senior forward's performance.

As McCoy is officially listed at day-to-day for tournament action, and will only play if "absolutely necessary" against the Trojans, Jarvis said he will start Mattison again.

"He had his best overall game versus FIU, and sure hoping he plays well in the tournament", said Jarvis.

Florida Atlantic has yet to win a post season game under Jarvis' tutelage, but this year could be the turning point. The Owls cleared their last two opponents in easy fashion with a 15.5 point margin of victory collectively. One could argue that they are hitting a peak at the right time, but the true test now comes with a contest away from the friendly confines of FAU Arena where they finished at 10-4.

Regardless, downplaying an opponent they have had no trouble with on either court will not be a factor.

"It's tough to beat a team three times, and I would be worried if our guys didn't respect Troy, but they do respect them and are not taking them for granted", Jarvis explained.

The Owls are 8-1 on the season when Stefan Moody connects for three or more 3-point baskets.

Trojans at a Glance

Troy is averaging just 61.4 points per game, placing them 10th in the conference and 302nd nationally. Contributing heavily towards these rankings is a 39.6% mark in proficiency from the floor overall (11th SBC, 322nd nationally).

Accordingly, there were no Trojans listed on the Sun Belt's 2012-13 All SBC Teams.

Guard RJ Scott had posted an average of 9.5 ppg during the regular season meetings with FAU, but won't be a factor Friday having been suspended for the remainder of the season for a violation of team rules back in January. It is speculated that he will transfer.

The Trojans are currently on a five game losing streak dating back to a 51-53 loss to North Texas on February 16th, and have dropped seven of their last nine games.

Most recently it was a disappointing 53-49 defeat at the hands of South Alabama. After leading 25-9 with 3:17 to play in the first half, the Trojan's defense collapsed as the Jaguars countered with a 19-3 run to pull even early in the 2nd period.

Junior guard Emil Jones (11.8 ppg, 18th SBC) was practically a one man show with a team best 22 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals for the night, but Troy was outscored 34-21 in the second half.

Jones is one a a few league back court members to grace the top 20 in rebounding with 5.5 per outing (19th SBC), but sits 8th in assists behind fellow Trojan Hunter Williams (3.2 apg, 5th SBC).

After flirting with a 2-3 set against USA, Coach Don Maestri appears content in favoring a small line-up on Friday night given the insertion of G Deonata Jethroe back into the starting five.

The Trojans have never faced Florida Atlantic in the Sun Belt Tournament, although the two did meet during their Atlantic Sun days back in 2004. The Trojans came out on the wining end that time around with an 85-82 victory over the Owls in Nashville, TN.

Opponents have won against Troy 12-of-15 times during the 2012-13 regular season when beating them off the glass.

Latest Line:

FAU -2

Owl's Nest Prediction

At 3-13, the Owls have not been good on the road; although this is technically a neutral court where they are 1-0 for 2012-13.

But they take the four factors to winning, and the numbers game, in handy fashion.

Barring a meltdown, look for them to avoid being blanked in Sun Belt Tournament in their last trip to Hot Springs.

FAU -4
