Florida Atlantic University women’s basketball has welcomed its first 2017-18 Owl as Head Women’s Basketball Coach Kellie Lewis-Jay announced the signing of transfer Nicole Jimenez on Friday.

Jimenez, a South-Florida native, will join the squad when she graduates from Broward College in 2017. She had a very impressive freshman season with the Seahawks at the guard position being named to the FCSAA/NJCAA Region VIII All-Tournament Team and All-State teams and earning All-Southern Conference First Team honors. She excelled in the classroom as well, earning a spot on the NJCAA All-Academic Team.

“When I think of Nicole Jimenez, a few words come to mind: fire, passion, leader, competitor and winner,” said Lewis-Jay. “Nicole plays the game with an energy that is hard to find; she loves the game of basketball.”

Offensively, Jimenez should fit in nicely with this Owl squad as she made 62 three-pointers in her freshman season. According to the final NJCAA national rankings, Jimenez finished 23rd in steals per game (2.8), 26th in three-point field goal percentage (40.3) and 50th in assists per game (4.2). In the final NJCAA Region 8 rankings, Jimenez finished fifth in steals per game, sixth in assists per game, seventh in three-point field goal percentage, seventh in points per game (15.5), ninth in points (449) and 10th in free throw percentage (73.5).

“Nicole is a gym rat, and is the definition of ‘student of the game’,” continued Lewis-Jay.  “She can score in many different ways: she can shoot the three, she can hit the pull up and she can get to the rim. Defensively she harasses opposing guards. She is someone you want on your team.”

While in high school at Florida Christian, Jimenez averaged 17 points per game, five rebounds per game, and eight steals per game in her senior year. She was also named to the All-Dade First Team in both her junior and senior seasons.

“Nicole’s skill set, her heart and her passion will be a great addition to our program,” added Lewis-Jay.

A fourth quarter offensive drought led to a 77-67 loss for Florida Atlantic University women’s basketball (3-3) in their Thanksgiving Tournament championship game against Richmond (3-3) on Saturday afternoon.

Going into the last 10 minutes of the contest, the Spiders took the lead, 59-56, at the seven-minute mark off a Janelle Hubbard 3-pointer.

The Owls looked stagnant as they remained scoreless from 9:04 until 3:26 when Perry broke the ice with a layup to bring FAU within nine.

Fellow freshman Katelyn O’Reilly closed the gab a bit more by taking two at the free throw line followed by a basket by Vashnie Perry to put FAU down five with two minutes to play.

Foul trouble allowed Richmond to pull ahead and they would run away with it in the last minute to close the game 77-67.

Perry more than doubled her career high in points with 15 as well as set a new personal best in 3-pointers with two. She shot 6-for-14 from the floor and 2-for-4 from beyond the arc.

FAU will head across the country to play Arizona on Thursday, Dec. 1 in Tucson, Ariz. followed by Grand Canyon University on Sunday, Dec. 4 in Phoenix.
