Amazingly, we will enter the final month of the 2018 regular season this weekend. It will begin a day early, with a Friday night rivalry game ahead of four C-USA games and two non-conference contests at SEC schools on Saturday.
WKU and Middle Tennessee will be meeting for the 68th time on Friday night in Murfreesboro, making it the most-played rivalry in Conference USA. Lately, it has been one of its most exciting, as four of the last six meetings in the series have gone into overtime and six of the last seven have been decided by one possession.
Saturday’s conference play begins with Marshall traveling to Southern Miss in a matchup of two of the league’s top defenses. The Thundering Herd are especially stout on the ground, ranking second in C-USA in rushing defense (105.7 yards per game), while the Golden Eagles have been tough to pass against, second in the conference, yielding 167.1 yards per outing through the air.
Lone Star State rivals UTEP and Rice meet in Houston. This game features a matchup of the league’s two first-year coaches as Dana Dimel leads the Miners against Mike Bloomgren’s Owls.
The 17th annual Shula Bowl is set for Saturday evening in Miami, as Florida Atlantic makes the 45 mile drive south to battle FIU. The Panthers are off to their best start as a member of C-USA (4-0, 6-2) and bowl-eligible for the second straight season, but the defending East Division champion Owls would like to become the first school to win back-to-back years in this series since FIU in 2011-12.
UAB is off to a 5-0 start in league play and it will look to match its FBS school record for victories (8) with a win over UTSA at Legion Field, where the Blazers have won 10 straight games.
There are a pair of non-conference games on the docket at SEC schools. Charlotte will face an SEC school for just the second time when it visits Tennessee, while Louisiana Tech visits Mississippi State, looking to get revenge for a home loss to the Bulldogs last season.
