Owls at a glance

The Owls earned their #28 national ranking with an impressive comeback victory over Florida on Tuesday. Before that 13-11 victory in Gainesville, FAU squeezed out a conference series victory against Western Kentucky in Bowling Green.

The series win over the Hilltoppers was the Owls fifth C-USA series victory in six tries this season. That series win also allowed FAU to remain atop the C-USA standings, albeit tied with Southern Miss.

After a brief offensive slump in the series against Louisiana Tech, the Owls' bats have struck gold again. Senior 3B Joe Montes was named C-USA’s Hitter of the Week after batting .462 with 2 HR and 6 RBI. Montes is now second on the team in season BA with .340, behind Francisco Urbaez with the conference's fifth best BA at .359.

As a squad, the Owls are pace C-USA in hits (427), and second in both team BA (.299) and slugging percentage (.448).

Coming off a pair off appearances in the WKU series last weekend, Blake Sanderson will get the start in Friday's game. The Senior RHP saw no decision in both his 3.2 IP in Game One (which was later postponed mid-game due to rain) and 1.0 IP in Game Three.

This the Owls second to last home series this season. They will play FGCU at home on Tuesday before kicking off an eight game road-trip, starting with a crucial three game set against Southern Miss.

Monarchs at a Glance

Old Dominion has won 2 of their last 3 C-USA sets, with their most recent win being in their home series against FIU. This allowed ODU to jump the Panthers for ninth place in the C-USA standings.

Despite the series victory days before, ODU fell 10-7 against #12 East Carolina this past Wednesday.

The Monarchs are an impressive 8-7 away from Norfolk, including 4-5 on the road in conference play, considerably better than their 3-6 C-USA home record.

Individually, six Monarchs are hitting over .300, and are led by Jared Hancock's .357 BA. Leadoff hitter Bryce Windham (.340, 1 HR, 14 RBI) has reached base in all but one game this season.

After this series, Old Dominion will travel back home for a mid-week matchup against Virginia Tech before facing a Louisiana Tech ballclub who are amidst recovering from a destructive tornado which ripped through their Ruston campus early Thursday morning.

Old Dominion takes an early over the Owls with 3 runs scored in the top of the 1st, but Udie came in clutch with a huge 2-run homer to put the Owls on the board in the bottom of the inning!

The Owls have had a tough game both offensively and with their pitching. They can't seem to find a groove tonight and it's showing. The Owls have had just 6 hits in 7 innings and really haven't put themselves in many situations to bring in any runs.

The Owls are really struggling tonight, it almost looks like a completely different team than we saw in Gainesville on Tuesday. A lot of defensive mistakes that shouldn't happen are happening, and they just can't seem to put balls in play. Hopefully tonight is just a fluke and they can pull it together for the rest of the series.

FAU baseball fell in the series opener Friday night to Old Dominion, 7-2.

“Extremely disappointing night, I take full responsibility, our guys weren’t ready to play", said Head Coach John McCormack.

"From the first pitch, we gave up a three-spot in the first, it could’ve been worse. Relief pitching wasn’t good, we had chances to drive in guys … we made defensive errors. It was kind of shocking, honestly.”

ODU (25-16, 8-11 Conference USA) scored three times in the first inning and wouldn’t relinquish the lead. Five singles, two scoring runs, along with a bases-loaded walk, brought all nine Monarchs to the plate. FAU’s (28-13, 14-5 C-USA) only scoring of the night came in the bottom half when Andru Summerall took a 2-2 offering over the fence in rightfield to cut it to one.

That’s all the Owls would get, as ODU pitching scattered five hits over the final eight home innings. The Monarchs added one in the fifth and three more in the sixth, on a Vinnie Pasquantino home run.

Game two on Saturday starts at 4:00 PM, with Mike Ruff taking the hill for FAU against Nick Pantos of the Monarchs.

The Owls had their 1st pitching change today in the top of the inning and brought in Eric Keating who delivered FAU's 1st scoreless inning this game. This might be the boost the guys needed to bring them back. They just need to wake up the bats now!
