We're down to the final weekend before national signing day, and if it appears that this period of time has a different flavor for the Owls than in recent years past, it's because it does. And one can thank the transfer portal for that - a free market system that has dramatically changed the timing and fluidity of class cycles at large.

FAU locked up a number of transfers and high school pledges in the early signing period, and were slim on their availability afterwards, however that has somewhat changed with recent departures on the line and special teams. Further shifts could very well be coming, and for now fans should be content in the fact that their team is presently sitting well, with more selective choices a likely strategy. As always, a surprise or two could be be in order as well.

For now, Coach Taggart and his relatively newly minted 2022 staff will be bringing in a select list of prospects to round out the final push before next Wednesday. Below is a list of those which are expected to be in hand for the weekend.

Jaylen Wester - Current Class of 2022 commit and brother of FAU WR LaJohntay Wester. More on him Here.

Michael Boone - Boone is a 6-0, 185 lbs Tampa Bay Tech corner product who is currently pledged to Arkansas State. With a three star 247 rating, he has also drawn interest from fellow C-USA programs Marshall, MTSU, and WKU.

Andrew Tuazama II - This East Mississippi CC defensive lineman (photo center above) goes by "Drew", and offers some size at 6-6, 255 lbs. Tallied 32 tackles, with 6 tackles for loss this past season. Previous stop was at Syracuse. Other C-USA programs have shown potential interest in his services and include UAB, UTSA, and Marshall. Recently picked up a reported offer from Ole Miss as well. Also played basketball in high school, and shattered the backboard in an Adidas Summer Championship as a sophomore.

A’ceon “Ace” Cobb - As reported previously, the 6-3, 180 lbs WR visited FAU late June of 2021. Saw his first offer come from the Owls back on October 24th, 2020. Stock has risen since. He hails from Jones High School in Orlando.

Nikki Taylor - Taylor is a 5-11, 165 lbs speedster out of Luverne, AL. He was previously pledged to Kansas but ended that relationship in early December. Taylor was offered by the Owls on January 19th. He has "turn it up speed" - as shown in his solid return capabilities.

Marquish Seabon - A running back out of Lake Wales, that might be the most intriguing visitor for the period. Built heavy from the waist down, he stands in at 5-9, 190 lbs and displays a strong burst with quick lateral shifting ability out of the hole.

Aidan Robbins - A 6-2, 230 lbs Louisville RB transfer who entered the portal on January 11th, Robbins departure is the product of a deep running back room. He saw action in one contest for the Cardinals during the 2021 season yet made the most if it rushing the ball twice for 41 yards and a touchdown.

Dearis Thomas - Thomas is a 6-1, 223 lbs linebacker who now hails from Naples, FL. Recently relocated to Florida from Cincinnati, OH. Has very good ability to make tackles in space. Recruited by FAU LB Coach Lance Thompson.

Kareem Wilson - Gulliver Prep defensive end prospect who was offered by the Owls on January 20th. Reported offer form Alabama State. Was named an MVP at FIU's summer camp back in June, 2021. Listed at 6-3, 240 lbs.

Elijah Deravil - 6-1, 180 lbs Garden City Community College defensive back who is regarded as a physical player that excels in zone schemes. Enjoyed a previous stint at Bethune Cookman. Played his high school ball at North Miami where he also ran the 200 meter in track. Posted 20 solo tackles with 2 interceptions and five pass break ups in his senior season.

Jayshon Platt - 6-1, 185 lbs WR out of Venice, FL. Also has reported offer from Navy as well as Western Michigan. Recruited by Coach Raymond Woodie and has seen the action increase as of late. Had a productive senior season that saw him attain 1,070 yards with 12 scores. Son of former five star FSU recruit DiShon Platt.

Any word on how many scholarships could be available for February 2nd signing day or beyond.
Hard to keep track with some Seniors leaving with a year remaining (Tronti) and those entering the portal freeing up scholarships.

Very fluid. Way too many variables, portal has changed everything. As well as possible Spring departures.

It’s unfortunate but gone are the days of building a program through the local high school ranks at this level. Feels like the roster will be dramatically different year in and year out. Wonder how sustainable over the long term that is

Depends on if and when they they modify it with set dates and times it can be managed by, just like signing an NLI.

The Thomas and Thompson connection…

So, I am just curious. Maybe it is just the nature of the transfer portal system, but is there any players in the recruiting talk that has anyone excited for next season so far? Sometimes there is a “big splash” prospect that is unrealistic for FAU to get that gets everyone excited for next season.

We will likely have the best LB crew in the conference next season.

The transfers each check multiple boxes and, if the scheme is right, it will be hard to run the ball on us.

So, "collectively", that group should produce some excitement…
