Owl Notes

Florida Atlantic has had a rough last two weeks, and with the toughest portion of the schedule now over will look forward to a reuniting with North Texas after a four year hiatus.

Emotions ran high once again in a cliff hanger ending on Saturday, as the Owls didn't have enough in the tank to complete the take down of Purdue in West Lafayette.

There were some repeat issues regarding accuracy, self-inflicted penalties, and inability to get the ball over the finish line deep in the red zone. But there was also one key indicator that the performance was not as bad as some perceive.

FAU has just one win over P5 competition all time in it's 22 years as a program. That came against Minnesota back in 2007 by the score of 42-39 and the Gophers would end up going 1-11. Saturday night's 28-26 loss to Purdue was the closest margin of defeat ever for a P5 opponent, second to Florida's 20-14 win over FAU in overtime back in 2015. None of the others are even close.

That said, the Owls should see upticks in both third down percentage and red zone efficiency starting next weekend, as both have taken some swipes the last two games.

Wide receiver LaJohntay Wester (photo above) is rapidly closing in on a historical mark. So far through just five games he has seven receiving touchdowns to his credit. The program record for a single season is nine so it appears he will match that milestone soon and break it not too far the distant future as well.

  • 9 Roosevelt Bynes 2003
  • 9 Anthony Crissinger-Hill 2003
  • 9 Cortez Gent 2008
  • 9 Cortez Gent 2007

The Owls 461 yards per game is 4th in Conference USA heading back into league action, and their 401.6 yards per game allowed ranks 6th. However they are 2nd in touchdowns (21) behind only Western Kentucky (25) who netted 10 of theirs against FIU.

With Saturday being a pivotal contest, FAU will be looking to avenge a 41-38 loss in Denton the last time the two teams met.

Mean Green Notes

At 2-3 on the season, North Texas is coming off a 44-33 loss to Memphis on the road. UNT junior quarterback Austin Aune passed for 371 yards and three touchdowns, but also threw two interceptions that were returned for Tiger scores.

Aune hasn't been the most accurate passer as he checks into the weekend with a 54.4% success rate while throwing six interceptions overall.

He throws to a half dozen regular targets, and has likening for both 5th year junior Roderic Burns and Missouri transfer Ja'Mori Maclin. Originally a walk on Burns earned a scholarship and has become the unit leader with 333 yards on the year. However against the Tigers Aune threw to 12 different players.

In the backfield UNT employs a primary platoon of four ball carriers, and are led by Oscar Adaway III (365 YDS) and 2021 C-USA All Freshman Ayo Adeyi (364 YDS). Adway is returning to action after missing 2021 with a torn ACL.

Overall the Mean Green trail only the Owls in total yards gained on the ground with 984.

Senior linebacker KD Davis is both a vocal and field leader for UNT with a team high 43 total tackles with 28 being solo efforts. Behind Davis is junior linebacker Larry Nixon III who has pitched in 38 total tackles with 19 solo.

Understandable since a player can participate in 4 games during the season and still be Red Shirted.
No need to declare now.
With the way injuries go, may as well keep all options available.
