Softball: Owls Down FIU 4-3 on Senior Night

Victory guarantees FAU at least the no. 4 seed in conference tournament Joshlyn Martinez’s RBI single was the difference in the softball team’s 4-3 win over FIU on Friday night. The Golden Panthers took a 1-0 lead in the tip of the second inning on a RBI single by Jenny Welch. FAU (27-23, 12-9 Sun Belt) tied the game in the bottom half of the inning when Rose Gressley scored on a wild pitch by Kasey Barrett. FAU broke the tie in the bottom of the third, scoring two runs on a towering homerun to left by Rose Gressley. The blast was Gressley’s first career homer and put the Owls ahead 3-1. The Golden Panthers cut the lead in half on a solo homerun by Brie Rojas in the top of the fourth. FAU was one out away from the win, but Jackie Tetlow had a pinch-hit RBI double that scored Jennifer Alfonso and tied the game at 2. The Owls had runners on first and second with just one out, but were unable to score. FIU had runners on second and third with just one out in the eighth, but Amber Barton entered the circle and got a strike out and fly out to end the threat. Kerri Croney led off the bottom of the eighth with a single. After a Jessica Myers popout, Rose Gressley struck again, this time with an infield single. Barton walked to load bases, bringing Martinez to the plate. Martinez lifted a single to right center that scored Croney and ended the game. The victory guarantees FAU at least the no. 4 seed in the conference tournament and a win Saturday night at FIU would guarantee the Owls the no. 3 seed. The game starts at 6 p.m.
