Volleyball: Owls Defeat USF in Straight Sets; Fall to New Mexico

Joanne Marras Tate had 64 assists and was named to the All-Tournament team as the Florida Atlantic University volleyball team split its two matches on the second day of the Hilton Garden Inn Classic on Saturday. The Owls defeated USF in straight sets (25-21, 25-19, 25-20) in their first match of the day. The first set was tied at seven when FAU scored seven of the next 10 points to take a 14-10 lead. The Bulls managed to pull within one on several occasions, but a Kristyna Dzmuranova kill and three straight USF attack errors gave FAU a 1-0 lead. FAU got out to a 6-0 lead in the second set and USF never got closer than three points the rest of the set, and a Christina Wallinger kill put the Owls ahead two sets to none. The third set, similar to the first was close early on, with the two teams tied at 12, but a Dzmuranova serving run put FAU ahead 19-13 to take control of the set. Dzmuranova combined with Georgia Robinson for the match clinching block. The Owls took the first set off of New Mexico, but were unable to sustain the momentum, eventually falling to the Lobos in four (26-24, 15-25, 18-25, 17-25). UNM led by 15-9, midway through the first set, but the Owls rallied to knot the score at 20. The teams traded points and UNM eventually had game point at 24-23, but Dzmuranova and Wallinger combined for the next three kills to complete the rally and take the set 26-24. UNM took control of the second set early on, staking themselves to early six point lead and take the set by the final score of 25-15. The Lobos were able to carry the momentum over to the third set, establishing another big lead and winning the set 25-18. UNM came out fast again to start the fourth set and FAU was unable to hold off the charge, falling 25-17 in the final set. FAU (7-7) will host Florida Gulf Coast in its home opener on Tuesday.
