Women’s Hoops: FAU Outlasts Arkansas St. 85-69

Lyrell Barfield leads FAU with a career-high 23 points Lyrell Barfield scored 20 of her 23 points in the second half as the FAU women’s basketball team erased an 11-point deficit in an 85-69 victory over Arkansas St. on Saturday night at FAU Arena. The Owls (9-10, 5-4) received a stellar offensive performance from Lyrell Barfield, who notched career-highs in points, field goals and three-point field goals. The junior was able to get open looks in the second period and scored 23 points total on 9-of-17 shooting from the field. Barfield also collected a team-high six rebounds and made 5-of-12 shots from three-point range in 34 minutes on the floor. “She’s been a great spark for us and I am really proud with how we rallied around her,” said head coach Chancellor Dugan. The Red Wolves (7-12, 2-6) held a double-digit deficit early as the Owls trailed 25-14 with 10:30 remaining in the first half. FAU was able to whether an early shooting flurry from Arkansas St. and cut the deficit to 41-34 at halftime. The second half was a different story however as FAU began the final period on a 16-8 run over the first six minutes to take a 50-49 lead. The Owls continued to put pressure on the Red Wolves and cruised down the stretch for the double-digit victory. Three other Owls scored in double-figures in the game including Carla Stubbs, Erica Caldwell and Brittany Bowe. Caldwell led all bench scorers with 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting. Arkansas St. was led by Lyndsay Schlup who recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Sherina Scott led all scorers for ASU with 14 points. The 11-point deficit overcome by FAU is their largest overcome in a victory this season. The Owls overcame a nine-point deficit in the 63-61 victory over UCF back on December 12 in Boca Raton. The Owls will hit the road next week for a stiff conference matchup against South Alabama on Wednesday in Mobile, AL. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. eastern from the Mitchell Center.
