Lyrell Barfield and Brittany Bowe each record double-doubles The Florida Atlantic womens basketball team dropped its second straight decision in a 68-58 loss to South Alabama on Saturday night from FAU Arena. The Owls (6-7) were led by Lyrell Barfield who recorded the first double-double of her career. The junior paced FAU with 16 points and collected a career-high 10 rebounds. Brittany Bowe also recorded a double-double with 15 points and a career-high 11 rebounds. The senior also appeared in her 100th career game and led FAU with four assists. The pair of double-doubles are the first for FAU this season. The Jaguars (8-6) were paced by their two leading scorers, Christian Shelter and Shakira Nettles. Nettles led all scorers with 25 points and made 9-of-17 shots from the field. Shelter added 17 points and five rebounds. South Alabama was unable to generate much offense in the first half making only 29% of their shots (11-for-37). However, the Jaguars were able to build a 32-31 lead at intermission with the help of an 8-for-9 performance from the free-throw line. The second half provided little respite for FAU as South Alabama methodically extended their lead. Shakira Nettles did most of the damage with 12 points and four rebounds. The senior gave South Alabama its first double-digit lead of the game when a three-pointer with 6:58 remaining extended the Jaguars advantage to 54-43. South Alabama did not look back the rest of the way and relied on sound free-throw shooting to seal the victory. The Jaguars made 8-of-12 shots from the free-throw line in the second half. FAU will return to action next week on Wednesday with a game against Troy at home. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
