The Florida Atlantic University women’s basketball team erased an 18-point deficit with 13 minutes remaining to defeat Georgia Southern 68-65 on Sunday afternoon at the FAU Arena.
Lyrell Barfield led all scorers with 20 points and made the game-winning three-pointer with six seconds remaining.
The Owls (3-6) trailed 40-24 at halftime and 54-36 with just over 13 minutes to go. FAU finished the game on a 32-21 run to snap a three-game losing streak and earn the program’s first victory over Georgia Southern in five tries.
“I thought we really played like a team in the second period,” said head coach Chancellor Dugan. “We played like we do in practice every day and it was a welcome sign.”
The Eagles (1-8) dropped their seventh straight game despite shooting almost 40% from behind the arc with four out of the five starters scoring in double-figures.
Jamie Navarro led the way for GSU with 16 points including a 4-of-8 performance from three-point range.
Barfield went 7-of-15 from the field and cracked the 20-point threshold for the first time this season. DaLita Scott also added 11 points and five rebounds for FAU.
Vontrice Dennis was the only player in the game with double-figure rebounds. The junior snatched 10 points and finished two points shy of her fourth double-double of the season.
FAU will get the rest of the week off before hitting the road on Saturday for a two-game trip.
The Owls will take on St. Louis next Sunday at Chaifetz Arena followed by a matchup against Kent State on December 21. Tip-off in the St. Louis game is scheduled for 3 p.m.
