Late Goal Lifts Troy Past FAU in Women’s Soccer

The road continues to be filled with hard knocks for the Florida Atlantic University women’s soccer team as the Owls lost their sixth straight road match with a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to rival Troy University in a Sun Belt Conference encounter on Sunday in Troy, Ala.

Mary Morris’ goal on a penalty kick with just over one minute remaining in regulation time gave the Trojans the victory, and sent the Owls home with a 3-8 overall record and 2-2 mark in conference action. Troy improves to 8-3-1 on the season and 3-1 in league matches.

FAU had enjoyed a 1-0 lead when freshman forward Jesse Shugg scored 35 seconds into the second half. The Burlington, ontario native has scored in five straight matches and leads the team with six goals on the season.

Troy evened the match in the 66th minute when Ruth Sutcliffe found the back of the net after receiving a pass from Morris. The goal was the sixth of the season for Sutcliffe, while Morris’ game-winner was her seventh goal of the season.

FAU tallied seven of its 10 shots in the second half with Shugg once again pacing the offense with three shots. Sophomore Allison Griffin added two shots while senior defender Janelle Blake, freshman forward Alexandra Major, freshman midfielder Camille Namba, freshman defender Allyson Buerosse and sophomore defender Tamara Kesser each had a shot in the match.

The Owls returns to Boca Raton next weekend when they host Middle Tennessee State University on Friday, October 8 at 7 p.m.
