Owls slide past Red Wolves behind solid pitching

Florida Atlantic (29-15, 17-7) tallied its second conference sweep of the season, and fifth win in a row, knocking off Arkansas State 3-2 on Sunday.

Once again, the Owls pitchers played their role effectively.

“Three earned runs on the weekend, and 10 hits, for a team that came in here hitting .324 - that’s pretty good”, said FAU coach John McCormack.

"We really didn't hit the ball this weekend as well as we normally do”, said ASU coach Tommy Raffo. “We really couldn't get anything in sync all weekend."

The Red Wolves (23-20, 12-9) went up 1-0 lead in the first inning when Murray Watts’ two out single scored Jordan Castaldo.

Later, in the top of the third, Arkansas State built on its advantage when Todd Baumgartner’s groundout RBI brought in Giovanni Garcia to put the Red Wolves in front 2-0.

However the Owls would answer with two runs in the bottom of the inning when DH Eddie Cassidy connected for a two out base loaded single scoring Raymond Church and Anthony Mesa to even things up.

The score remained tied until the bottom of the eighth, when Joey Burkhalter came on to pinch hit for Nathan Pittman. With the bases loaded and one out, Burkhalter connected for an RBI sacrifice fly allowing Andy Mee to score from third for the winning run.

Starter R.J. Alvarez (4-1) pitched seven innings in a no decision giving up two runs, with four strikeouts and one walk.

He was replaced by Ryan Bernal (5-1) who would retire all six Red Wolves’ he faced.

“Bernal has been the same guy all year, its fantastic”, McCormack said. “He can do a whole bunch of things.”

The Owls were going to go with Mee in the ninth, but he could not get warmed up in time.

Ross Humes (5-3) was the losing pitcher for Arkansas State.

The Owls will return to FAU Stadium on Tuesday to host UCF at 6:30 p.m. in the last of a five game home stand.
