Hilltoppers Ruin Homecoming

FAU (1-7, 0-4) had two full weeks to prepare for their toughest C-USA opponent in 2016 but it did not show as they were embarrassed 52-3 in Saturday's Homecoming game.

It was the worst home loss in program history.

The Hilltoppers point tally was the third most for the year, and was enabled by the Owls' allowance of a season high 661 yards defensively. Florida Atlantic's three points on offense was their lowest output on the year.

"We've got to keep growing up", said Coach Charlie Partridge on his post game radio show. "We're still a very young program and we've got to keep the young guys coming along."

Western Kentucky (6-3, 4-1) assumed a 24-0 lead using a quick strike pass offensive that netted scores from 76, 54, and 65 yards out through the air combined with a 45 yard field goal.

The Owls finally got on the scoreboard with six seconds to play in the first half thanks to Jake Stoshak's fumble recovery on an Owl punt. Unable to get into the endzone, Greg Joseph's 23 yard FG made it a 24-3 score at the break.

FAU was 0-7 on third down in the period and was outgained 360-84 in total yardage.

That would be it for the home team, as WKU pitched a 28-0 shut out in the second half scoring. The Owls finished 1-13 on third downs, eventually converting on their last attempt with 37 seconds to play.

"Energy on the sidelines was maintained for four quarters, it was not a lack of effort", Partridge said. "It's a matter of our depth being challenged all the way down to the core…they are getting a trial by fire."

Florida Atlantic punter Dalton Schomp set a school record with 466 yards tallied on the day, which was more than double the Owls' 202 yards on offense.

The quarterback combination of Jason Driskel (photo) and Daniel Parr finished 15-of-34 for 77 yards.

The offensive line may have taken another hit, as reserve Jack Breshears left the contest with an undisclosed injury.

FAU will next travel to Houston to take on Rice in the Battle of the Owls on Saturday, November 5th at 3:30 PM. The game can be seen on ESPN3.
