Late rally not enough

FAU scored twice in the eighth inning but wasn't able to overcome Boston College in a 5-2 loss on Friday night in the opening game of a three-game series in Boca Raton.

The Owls lost for the third straight Friday to start a weekend series and now stand 3-4 on the season, while Boston College improved to 4-3.

Trailing 5-0, FAU got the first four batters to reach the base paths in the eighth inning. Junior infielder Raymond Church started the rally by beating out an infield base hit with the bases loaded to score junior Joey Burkhalter. Senior Anthony Mesa would then score the team’s second run on a sacrifice fly junior outfielder Andy Mee.

Boston College broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth inning on a three-run homer over the right field fence by Matt Watson. The Eagles would add another run in the fifth inning on a lead off home run by Robbie Anston.

The lead grew to 5-0 in the top of the eighth inning as John Spatola singled home Mickey Wiswall from second base. Church recorded two of FAU’s five hits on the evening. Sophomore catcher Mike Albaladejo had a base hit and kept the Eagles’ base runners in check most of the night by throwing out three potential base stealers. Junior shortstop Nick Delguidice and Mesa each had a base hit.

FAU starting pitcher Taylor Everist fell to 0-3 on the season despite striking out six batters in five innings.

Boston College’s Anthony Melchionda and Anston had multi-hit performances for the northeastern visitors. Starting pitcher Pat Dean scattered four hits in seven strong innings to improve to 2-0 on the mound this season.

Game two of the series will begin tomorrow at 4 p.m.
