Baseball Falls to Auburn in Classic Finale

Tigers score seven runs in first two innings
The Auburn University baseball team shined in all phases of the game to cruise to a 17-4 victory over Florida Atlantic University on Sunday to conclude action in the weekend’s Auburn Classic at Plainsman Park in Auburn, Ala.

The Owls fall to 3-3 on the season and will return to the field on Friday against Boston College, a team it defeated 13-2 on Saturday.  Auburn improves to 4-2 on the season.

Senior Anthony Mesa and junior Nick Delguidice each had two hits to pace the Owls’ offense, which pounded 10 hits.  Mesa went 2-for-3 at the plate and scored a run in the sixth inning off a single to center field by Colby Gratton.  one of Delguidice’s hits was a double.

Junior Dan Scheffler scored a run and had one hit in three plate appearances.  His run in the second inning put FAU on the scoreboard.

Playing in front of a large and vocal crowd, Auburn struck quickly, scoring three runs in the opening frame and added four runs in the second inning to break the game open with a 7-1 advantage.  The Tigers scored runs in six of the eight innings and had 15 hits.

Auburn starting pitcher Cole Nelson struck out 12 FAU batters over six quality innings to record the mound victory.

The Owls’ game next Friday against Boston College will open a three-game weekend series.  The first pitch from the FAU Baseball Stadium is set for 6:30 p.m.
