FAU's offense comes away with a 18-16 win in a close fought battle

FAU's annual Fanfest was interrupted by weather, but the enthusiasm of 1,144 fans could be felt as the team took to the field flanked by a band 100 strong.

The offense, who was led by two Rusty Smith touchdown passes took the game 18-16.

But Howard Schnellenberger was pleased by the effort the defense showed.

"There's starting to be quite a competition between the two, and I'm so glad to see that. Because, for about two years here, we didn't have a situation where we had much competition between the offense and the defense. That's starting to be demonstrated now. And that's a very important aspect of progress, that will make the offense understand that it's gotta' work as hard as it can work to score on this team, and that it's not going to be given to them.  They will be a better offense as a result of it", said head coach Howard Schnellenberger.

Rusty Smith drove the team 60 yards and connected with Jamari Grant for the first points of the scrimmage. Three plays later Jamere Johnson recovered a fumble to pull the defense within three. Another point was scored by the defense in a stoppage of downs before Smith’s second drive found Darian Williams for his second touchdown of the day. The defense recorded two more stops and ended the half with an Alex Patte interception to go into the half 12-9.

Jeff Van Camp started the second half ending his first drive with a hand-off to Alfred Morris for a two-yard score. The offense would not score again but gained valuable experience for each of the four quarterbacks. Two QBs ended the day with 11 pass attempts and two ended the day with 10. The quartet found 11 receivers on the day and collectively tossed just one interception.

The running game was also balanced with nine players credited with a carry. Travis Jones had eight carries for 30 yards while Morris had eight for 25 yards and a score.

Defensively, Kevin Cyrille pressured the quarterback all afternoon and was credited with two sacks. Jamere Johnson picked up a fumble as did Jarvis Givens.
