Women's Soccer Downed by Robert Morris 1-0

The Florida Atlantic University women’s soccer team once again looked strong in the game statistics, but lost on the scoreboard in a 1-0 setback to Robert Morris University on Friday evening in the Owls’ home opener at the FAU Soccer Stadium in Boca Raton.

The Owls fall to 0-3 on the season, while Robert Morris improved to 2-1-1.  FAU will return to action on Sunday, September 5 against Fresno State University , starting at 10 a.m.

Florida Atlantic outshot the Colonials by a 15-12 margin but could not overcome Ayana Davis’ goal in the 21st minute.  Robert Morris goalkeeper Jessica Olin made four key saves to post the shutout.

FAU had many good scoring opportunities throughout the match, including the first six shots taken in the second half.  Freshman forward Jesse Shugg tallied a game-high five shots and senior forward Laura Hyvonen had a shot from inside the 18-yard box which was turned away by a diving Olin.  Freshman forward Alexandra Major and senior defender Janelle Blake each had two shots in the match.

Robert Morris found the back of the net on Davis ’ shot that just snuck inside the left goal post from 30 yards out in the center of the pitch.

Redshirt freshman Courtney Zwetsch made her first career start in net for FAU and made five saves in the match.

FAU also outshot Stetson University in the season-opening match, but suffered a 4-3 loss.

Video highlights of Friday’s match will be featured on the next episode of “FAU Sports Weekly,” which will be available on www.fausports.com on Wednesday, September 8.
