Some Call Him "Pistol"

Winter Park Highschool guard Brett Comer is Owl's first ever Sophomore commit

The 2011 season is still a ways off, but combo guard Brett Comer wants to be apart of what is going on in the Florida Atlantic University men's basketball program.  On Sunday, Comer became the latest verbal commitment for Owls, and the schools first ever sophomore commit.  "I'm really excited to play", said Comer.

Comer, who was on a family vacation this past weekend in South Beach, took an unofficial visit to the Boca Raton campus, and felt right at home.  His father, Troy Comer, said Assistant Coach Tim Kaine has been actively recruiting Brett for some time now, and that the FAU staff has been very sincere in the recruiting process. "I'm really looking forward to playing for him (Coach Jarvis).  He knows how to recruit. He has a good staff around him too. So, that helps a lot".

Comer has flown under the radar in a very big way until the last few days.  No services had him listed, but the talented guard, as has been the case with this years' signing class overall, had solid interest from established programs.  None had offered him yet,  but high majors Miami, Davidson, Kansas State, and Wichita State were all in contact and had him on their white board. In addition to FAU, he also visited Miami.

A pure combo guard who can play either position equally, Comer has put together an outstanding list of playing accolades, as shown on his personal site.  And, given his smart and entertaining style of play, he has drawn a number of player comparisons.  Some liken him to that of Adam Morrison, the former Gonzaga stand-out, given his appearance and scoring ability.  He once had the locks to justify the physical comparison, but has since gone with a "buzz-cut".  "I've heard that since sixth grade.  Every single game I ever played in out in Kansas , Nationals, everything.  Adam Morrison, Adam Morrison, Adam Morrison. So, I  got tired of it and cut my hair. " However, since then, Morrison recently did the same.  "So, I just can't get away from it", he said.

Another comparison he draws is that of "Pistol", in reference to the late great Pete Marovich.  This comparison comes by way of current Boston Celtics Head Coach Doc Rivers, whose son plays with Comer at Winter Park High School.  "Doc calls me Pistol Pete.  He thinks I am very smart when I play. I do the right things", said Comer.  And he likes this one alot better it seems.

Brett says that FAU has indicated that he will be playing a role where he can be a one or two at any given time and that will be dictated by the game climate - a valuable asset to offer.  "I think I will be backing up Ray, while he is there and playing the two - kind of like a rat pack thing". And he has the handles, and off-the-dribble moves required to do so.  But, if given a preference, he prefers the two guard:  "I like the two more than the one.  I like getting out and running, and being able to go in transition. To create and attack it (the basket) a lot", he said.

Currently, Comer is 6'-3", 185 pounds.  However he has a shoe size (14) that indicates he should grow another inch or so by the time he makes his way onto the FAU Arena hardwood.

Looking forward to it.
