Florida Atlantic (6-12-0, 5-6-0) battled hard, but came up short tonight in Boca Raton against rival Florida International, dropping a 1-0 decision to end regular season play.
The teams managed just six shots collectively during the first period, but the Golden Panthers (10-8-1, 7-4-0) made adjustments at the break which allowed a 12-4 advantage in the second.
The match remained scoreless until late when FIU’s Chelsea Leiva connected for her tenth goal of the season at the 78th minute mark.
Brittney Nash and Jesse Shugg paced the Owls’ attack with two shots each, and goalkeeper Courtney Zwetsch tallied six saves in the contest.
FAU enters the 2010 Sun Belt Tournament as the #7 seed and will next travel to Bowling Green, KY to take on #2 Middle Tennessee next Wednesday at approximately 3:00 p.m.
The Owls edged out a 1-0 home victory against the Blue Raiders earlier in the season.
