American Athletic Conference Announces Numerous Television Designations, Kickoff Times for 2024 Football Schedule
The American Athletic Conference has announced a number of kickoff times and television designations for the 2024 football season.
In addition to times and television assignments for the first three weeks of the 2024 season across ESPN platforms and on CBS Sports Network, Thursday’s announcement includes the kickoff times for The American’s Thursday and Friday prime time games on ESPN networks as well as those for Army and Navy home games.
The Week 1 schedule is highlighted by key nonconference matchups, including a Friday prime time matchup between Temple and Oklahoma Aug. 30 on ESPN. Charlotte hosts James Madison Saturday, Aug. 31, on ESPNU, while Florida Atlantic takes to the road to face Michigan State on Big Ten Network.
Conference play in The American begins in Week 2 with two Sept. 7 league games on CBS Sports Network. Army will play its first conference game under The American’s banner when the Black Knights visit Florida Atlantic at noon ET, while Navy begins conference play against Temple in Annapolis at 3:30 p.m. ET. Nonconference action on Sept. 7 includes Charlotte at North Carolina (3:30 p.m., ACC Network), South Florida at Alabama (7 p.m., ESPN) and Kansas State at Tulane (Noon, ESPN or ESPN2).
Intriguing matchups in Week 3 include Memphis at Florida State as the Tigers face their former head coach, Mike Norvell in Tallahassee (Noon, ESPN) and Rice at Houston (and former Tulane head coach Willie Fritz) in the annual Bayou Bucket as the Owls look for a second straight win against the Cougars (8 p.m. ET, ESPN+). Tulsa will host Oklahoma State at H.A. Chapman Stadium (Noon, ESPN2), while UTSA is at Texas (7 p.m. ET, ESPN), UAB will visit Arkansas (4:15 p.m. ET, SEC Network), and North Texas is at Texas Tech (Noon, FS1).
Eleven intraconference games from The American have already been designated for national television, beginning with the Week 2 Army-Florida Atlantic and Temple-Navy matchups. The Thursday-night slate of conference games on ESPN continues with Army at Temple (Sept. 26), Tulane at Charlotte (Oct. 31), Florida Atlantic at East Carolina (Nov. 7), East Carolina at Tulsa (Nov. 14) and Memphis at Tulane (Nov. 28). The American’s Friday-night lineup begins with Memphis at South Florida from Raymond James Stadium (Oct. 11), South Florida at Florida Atlantic (Nov. 1), Rice at Memphis (Nov. 8), North Texas at UTSA (Nov. 15) and Temple at UTSA (Nov. 22).
The final week of the 2024 regular season will feature a Black Friday game at noon on ESPN. One of three games currently slotted for Saturday, Nov. 30 - South Florida at Rice, Navy at East Carolina or UAB at Charlotte, will move to that Black Friday window. The selection will be made by Oct. 14.
Navy’s annual matchup against Notre Dame on Oct. 26 will be at noon ET on either ABC or ESPN, while the Midshipmen’s Nov. 16 home game against Tulane will be at noon ET on an ESPN network to be determined. Army will play a home game on an ESPN network for the first time since 2009 when the Black Knights host East Carolina Oct. 19 at noon at Michie Stadium.
All three games of the annual Commander-In-Chief’s Trophy series will air on CBS this season. Navy visits Air Force Oct. 5, while Army hosts Air Force Nov. 2. The annual Army-Navy game, the first in which both teams will be American Athletic Conference members, is scheduled for Dec. 14 in Landover, Maryland.
The American Athletic Conference Football Championship Game will air on ABC on Friday, Dec. 6 at 8 p.m. ET. It will be the 10th consecutive season that The American Championship will be televised on ABC.
Most of the remaining start times and television designations for the 2024 season will be made on a weekly basis through the season as part of the conference’s 12-day selection process. The most up-to-date schedule, with television designations, is available at TheAmerican.org.
American Athletic Conference teams figure to be well-positioned for a second appearance in the College Football Playoff in 2024 as the new Playoff format allows for the five highest-ranked conference champions to reach the 12-team field.
