Former NFL Great Hines Ward To Join FAU Football Coaching Staff

Florida Atlantic Head Coach Willie Taggert looks to continue to add big names to his coaching staff this offseason.

The latest comes in our confirmation that former NFL star Hines Ward will join the team in an off-field coaching role.

Ward has spent the last two years as a full-time offensive assistant with the New York Jets.

Ward played at the University of Georgia from 1994-1998. David Kelly, current FAU director of player personnel, was the running backs coach for the Dogs for both the 1994 and 1995 seasons.

During his time in the NFL, Ward amassed 1,000 receptions, over 12,000 yards receiving, four Pro Bowls, and two Super Bowl titles, all with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

He will be working side by side with newly-promoted Owls receivers coach Joey Thomas, who also played in the NFL. They are looking to improve a receiving core that only had one player with more than 20 receptions in 9 games last season.

Newly named offensive coordinator Michael Johnson also brings vast experience from the NFL, spending seven years (2000-2007) with the Falcons, Chargers, and Ravens in various offensive assistant roles.

The Owls return their top six of their top seven pass catchers from 2020, plus the hopeful return of redshirt senior John Mitchell, who missed the 2020 season after having knee surgery.
