FAU gets a TD, beats the spread -- and loses third straight game

All things considered, it wasn't as bad as it could have been.

Yes, FAU lost to Alabama 40-7, but the Tide is the No. 1 team in the nation and I expected a worse whipping. Not that it was pretty or that the Owls were ever in the game, but compared with past failures, this was not in the hide-your-head category.

FAU was able to snap Bama's shutout streak at two games with a late-game TD, and they also beat the spread for the second straight week. Of course, going in as a 52-point dog was nothing to be proud of.

So, those glass-half-full folks can hang their hat on those two things.

Now, some of us live in the real world, so we might look at the fact that until that fourth quarter drive against Bama's scrubs, FAU had gained 35 yards and had two first downs.

The Owls gained 75 yards and had four first downs on the TD drive that jacked up their game totals to 110 and 6. Bama had 503 yards and 25 first downs.

After barely getting by I-AA Wagner to start the season, FAU has lost three straight by a combined scored of 127-43 and been outgained 1,696 to 884.

Yes, two of those games were against SEC opponents, but Middle Tennessee had 480 yards and 31 points.

So where does FAU stand? We'll find out next week when the Owls host North Texas. At least the advanced training games are done with.
