FAU earns seventh regional berth at the Division I level

After five years of waiting, the Florida Atlantic University baseball program is back in an NCAA Regional.

The Owls (35-22) will take on the No. 3 seed Oregon State in the first round on Friday at 1 p.m. eastern at Alfred A. McKethan Stadium in Gainesville.

“It’s been a goal of this program all season,” said head coach John McCormack.  “I just want to thank everyone out there who has given us constant support over the year.”

The Beavers (31-22) posted a 12-15 mark in Pac-10 Conference play with an unofficial RPI of 25.  Oregon State finished the season strong and went 10-5 over its last 15 games.

Florida Atlantic and Oregon State have met once before on the baseball diamond.  The Beavers defeated the Owls 13-5 back on February 14, 1998 in a tournament in Vero Beach, Florida.

In the other half of the regional, the No. 1 seed Florida will take on the No. 4 Bethune-Cookman at 7 p.m. on Friday evening.  The winner of that game will face the winner of the FAU-Oregon State game on Saturday at 7 p.m.

FAU defeated Bethune-Cookman 8-4 on April 28 in Boca Raton and fell to Florida 7-3 on May 12 in Gainesville.

Last season, FAU defeated #17 Florida 7-6 in Gainesville marking the team’s only win over a ranked opponent in 2009.

“We are excited and ready to go,” McCormack said.  “This is only the beginning.
