FAU Baseball Drops Season Opener to Cincinnati

Late Rally Falls Short Florida Atlantic scored two runs in the ninth inning but fell in its 2010 season opener 5-3 to the University of Cincinnati at the FAU Baseball Stadium on Friday night. Junior Dan Scheffler’s two-out, two-run single in the ninth inning scored freshman Chase Vergason and sophomore Mike Albaladejo to bring the Owls within two runs at 5-3. But that’s as close as they got before the third out was made in the inning. The visiting Bearcats grabbed an early 1-0 advantage on a solo home run to right field by Kevin Johnson. He finished the game 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored. FAU would answer in the bottom of the fourth inning as a double by junior Raymond Church plated junior Andy Mee from second base with the team’s first run of the season. Cincinnati would break the game open with a pair of unearned runs in the fifth and added insurance runs in the seventh and eighth innings before surviving the Owls’ late inning rally. Junior Colby Gratton paced FAU’s offensive attack with two hits. On the mound, junior right-hander Taylor Everist suffered the loss despite not issuing any walks and striking out five batters over six quality innings. The two teams will continue the weekend series on Saturday, with the first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m.
