Owls Take Rubber Match 6-3; Regain First Place

Mee paces FAU offensive going 5-of-5 with three RBI Andy Mee continued to showcase his versatility on Sunday as the two-way player helped FAU erase a 3-0 deficit to defeat South Alabama 6-3. The victory clinched the series for FAU and improved the Owls to 5-0 in Sun Belt series on the road this season. The Jaguars (29-20, 16-8) got on the board early with three runs in the first three innings off FAU starter R.J. Alvarez. Alvarez settled down in the middle frames and earned a no decision in five innings pitched; allowing three runs (two earned) and nine hits with three walks and three strikeouts. The Owls (31-17, 19-8) were unable to generate any offense until the eighth, when Anthony Mesa sparked the rally with a lead-off double down the left field line. After a single by Raymond Church put runners on the corners, Mike Albaladejo reached on a throwing error by the pitcher Garrett Harris that allowed Mesa to score and brought FAU within 3-1. With both of the tying runs on base and nobody out, South Alabama turned to Friday’s starter D.D. Hanks to get out of the jam. However, the first batter Hanks faced, Andy Mee, tattooed a three-run home run over the wall in left that gave the Owls their first lead of the game at 4-3. Hanks didn’t have much success with the next batter he faced, as Dan Scheffler crushed an opposite field home run to right that extended FAU’s lead to 5-3. Scheffler tacked on another RBI in the ninth with a single to left that scored Albaladejo. The first baseman finished the game 3-for-5 with two RBI. Hanks (9-4) picked up his second loss of the series and did not record an out while giving up two home runs to the only two batters he faced. Mee then capped off his spectacular day with a scoreless ninth to earn his Sun Belt leading 11th save of the season and secure the win for FAU. Jason Boyer, Hugh Adams and Ryan Bernal each pitched scoreless frames in the sixth, seventh and eighth to keep the Owls in the game. Adams (3-0) earned the win by pitching 1.2 innings while allowing only one hit with one strikeout. The victory propels the Owls into sole possession of first place in the Sun Belt. FAU will be back in action at home on Tuesday when they face off against Florida Gulf Coast. The Owls defeated the Eagles 4-3 back on April 20 in Fort Myers. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. Box Score Discussion
