Men’s Hoops Inks International Standout

Argentinean guard Pablo Bertone becomes second member of 2010 class It appears FAU coach Mike Jarvis is content and settled on a calculated recruiting strategy that will place emphasis on skill, speed, depth, and the guard position. Just a few weeks ago Dennis Mavin of The Rock School became the first member of the 2010 class. Now, the slashing guard has company. Pablo Bertone of Rise Academy in Philadelphia, PA will join Mavin as the second signee for Florida Atlantic this season according to Rise Academy coach Vin Sparacio. After verbally committing in late April, Bertone made it official last week by signing a National Letter of Intent said Sparacio. A native of Argentina and former member of the National Team , Bertone is a versatile combo guard who can play three positions skillfully and makes a living off beating opponents to the basket. “He’s very creative, exciting to watch, and can get to the hoop in a lot of ways”, Sparacio said. “He can take you on the first step.” But he can also pass with precision, and is expected to ultimately focus at the point guard for the Owls down the line. Bertone arrived at Rise Academy from Argentina back in October, 2009 and quickly turned some heads while working towards averages of 16.4 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 5.5 assists per game. “People knew about him. We played all these top schools, and then word got out”, said Sparacio. “In January and February we went down to Florida, and that’s where he drew a lot of attention.” During that time, Sparacio took him to FAU Arena to meet with the Owls’ coaches and tour the campus. It was a meeting meant to be as the staff, the school, and the location were just what he desired. After the visit, and up until his commitment, recruitment heated substantially for Bertone as his play drew campus visits from coaches of other Division I programs such as Niagra, Rice, Temple, and Delaware. But Jarvis was able to seal the deal early, ahead of them, and land another gem. “Mike and his son did a great job, and came out the following week to Philadelphia”, continued Sparacio. “They made the push and they got him. He’s definitely a steal, without a doubt.” At age 20, Bertone is a mature prospect when compared to traditional US signees who can come in as young as 17 out of high school. His style has been compared by many to that of current Temple Owl player Juan Fernandez , who also hails from Argentina and has had a very successful showing in Philadelphia.
